To say as many reviewers have, that the location is superb, is just that, IE a review of the location, NOT the hotel. The location IS superb and trust me, you will see plenty of what the location has to offer, rather than spending any longer than you need to in the hotel. Lots of reviewers have commented on the speed of the lifts and such, but I would never nit-pick over trivia such as this, it’s a high rise hotel at the end of the day and getting to your room by lift is unavoidable, so I will try to stick to the salient points of why I believe that this disgusting hotel needs its 4 star rating reducing to no more than 1 star. The room was dark, smelly, cramped, dishevelled and in need of total refurbishment, the bathroom was tiny, with less than an inch between the door opening and almost striking the toilet pan. The bath itself was only three quarter length and incredibly shallow, only allowing for a brief wash in it as it was so uncomfortable and the plumbing was loose which was very worrying. The carpets were old, dirty and worn, the paint was peeling and the wallpaper was stained and there were absolutely NO worthwhile facilities unless you were prepared to pay over and above the extortionate fees already paid for what amounts to a tiny, lifeless room. The concierge staff were complete idiots who would probably struggle to walk and chew gum at the same time, which are comments I make following announcements they made in the early hours across the hotel tannoy system about a fire in the hotel which caused mass panic. In the event, it was a tiny fire outside the building which was of absolutely no significance whatsoever and was brought under control quickly by the fire department, but the concierge saw fit to wake everybody in the hotel with a loud tannoy message, alerting everybody of the fire, but saying that the fire was under control and that everybody should stay in their rooms and NOT panic. As you might expect, this totally unnecessary announcement actually CAUSED panic as everyone tried to leave the hotel, following which, the announcements from the concierge got aggressive and incoherent and as guests started to arrive in the lobby having descended the stairwell, the concierge shouted down the tannoy that everyone was to return to their rooms as the fire had been brought under control. After the panic had subdued and the guests returned to their rooms, the already broken night’s sleep was interrupted yet again at around 8am the following morning, by the fire alarm sounding, which was initially and naturally met by my husband and I throwing clothes on in order to evacuate the hotel, but the alarm was then followed by a tannoy announcement that the fire alarms were being tested. This ‘testing’ went on for 45 minutes, followed by a further announcement that “the fire alarms are working fine now, if you hear them again there is a real fire”. I read another review that a guest who stopped at the same time we did, got a refund of that nights stay, but only because he asked for it. Following the level of incompetence which led to an awful nights stay, shouldn’t the management have refunded every guest WITHOUT them needing to ask? There are additional charges if you want Wi-Fi ($14:10 per day!!!), further charges if you want coffee making facilities in your room and even charges for holding your baggage if you are too early to you check in and again if you are waiting for transport from the hotel to the airport, but travelling into New York before the transport arrives and despite the bizarre $3:75 per item fee, you are advised NOT to leave any expensive items in your luggage. UNBELIEVABLE, does this mean that they do not trust their staff to either NOT root through guests baggage and steal from them, or NOT to give the wrong baggage to the wrong person? Either way, this exhibits unnecessary profiteering and the clear expectation by management of either gross incompetence or theft by their staff. How can they possibly charge for a service they will not guarantee? The room and the facilities (or lack of them) meant that this hotel is only just better than a hostel, therefore I have absolutely no idea where the 4 star rating comes from, so the proprietors are guilty of serious misrepresentation as far as I am concerned, which if in the UK, would lead to prosecution and/or a refund and compensation to the aggrieved party. Still, a lesson learned, I will never stay, or waste my money ever again in this dowdy dump of a hotel and if you are reading this review, I suggest you take heed.",1.0,1.0,1.0,5.0,1.0,1.0,2012,2012-04-26,1,"4 stars my [--] Having travelled a lot with work and stayed in many a dive of a hotel, my opinion of the less than salubrious ones has been heightened after stopping at Park Central, WHAT A DUMP and not a particularly cheap one either. While planning the trip, we looked at various hotels in the downtown area. Having never stayed at the Hotel Nikko, we decided to try it out, based on the locationand the great nightly rate we found. It surpassed my expectations by far! It's a beautiful hotel in the perfect location to restaurants, Union Square, the MUNI and BART trains (public transportation that's only a couple blocks away), Chinatown, North Beach, and many other attractions. The front desk staff was very friendly and helpful, and the rooms were spacious, clean and very comfortable.
