+The CMIE has calculated the unemployment rate from 22 March to 5 April—the period that witnessed a major impact of the lockdown on the labor force. The data showed that as of 5 April, the unemployment rate had spiked to 23.38 percent from 8.41 percent recorded on 22 March.

+An increase in compensation for medical staff as well as health and safety inspectors, (ii) individuals under quarantine to receive sick leave benefits and sick leave pay to equal at least the minimum wage until the end of 2020; (iii) unemployment benefits to equal at least the minimum wage for three months, including for self-employed workers.

+The countrywide lockdown announced is leading the Indian economy into troubled waters. As thousands of daily-wage laborers across the country stare at an uncertain future—with the lockdown bringing economic activity in India to a near-complete halt—their avenues for fruitful employment and job security look dim.

+The government should assist companies and workers facing distress through the Unemployment insurance fund (UIF) and special programs from the Industrial Development Corporation. Additional funds should be made available for the health response to Covid-19, workers with an income below a certain threshold will receive a small tax subsidy during the next four months, and the most vulnerable families will receive temporarily higher social grant amounts for the next couple of months. Funds should be available to assist SMEs under stress, mainly in the tourism and hospitality sectors, and a small -scale farmers operating in the poultry, livestock and vegetables sectors.

+One such distinguished faculty who has accomplished great feats in the domain of research and development is Dr. Varij Panwar, Professor, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Graphic Era Deemed to be University, Dehradun. The young and talented scientist has been granted patents by the government of India for two of his splendid inventions in accordance with the provisions of The Patents Act, 1970 for a period of 20 years.

+In 2019, Dr. Varij came up with a unique method for generation of electricity. He invented a flexible and wearable ‘metal coated Ionic Polymer Nanocomposite’ that produces electricity as a result of bodily movement. This electricity can be utilized for charging electronic components such as mobiles phones, transmitter, and receivers and thus, can be of great service to the military personnel of the nation who can wear it in high-altitude areas which lack access to electric power. Along with this, the nanocomposites can also be used to measure blood pressure, pulse rate and rhythm as well as body temperature without any need of charging. This material can survive for 10-12 years and employs Lithium salt to make the Platinum electrode.

+​On March 19, 2025, Graphic Era University (GEU), in collaboration with the Amelioration of Biodiversity and Environmental Research (AMBER) Foundation, successfully established the Centre for Sustainable Ecology and Biodiversity Research (CSEBR) in Ghimtoli, Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand. Situated at an elevation of 2,000 meters above mean sea level, this research facility is dedicated to studying biodiversity conservation, traditional farming practices, and climate resilience in the villages surrounding the Mandakini catchment area of the Rudraprayag Forest Division, adjacent to Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary.

+Objectives
+
+The objectives of the Centre align with several UN SDGs. By supporting traditional and sustainable agricultural practices, the Centre contributes to SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), enhancing food security and nutrition for local communities. In line with SDG 13 (Climate Action), research on climate resilience and the impact of forest fires aids in developing climate adaptation strategies. The Centre’s biodiversity conservation efforts help protect and restore ecosystems while supporting pollinator populations, aligning with SDG 15 (Life on Land). Furthermore, by encouraging sustainable farming and resource management practices, the Centre promotes responsible environmental stewardship, addressing SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). Lastly, fostering collaborations with research institutions, NGOs, and local communities strengthens partnerships for sustainable ecological management, contributing to SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

+Dr. Pallavi Singh has been a Seasoned academician and versatile Researcher with more than 16 years of experience in teaching, research, Innovation, and leadership experience in the domain of Biotechnology. She is currently serving as Associate Professor and Program Coordinator (B.Tech. Biotechnology) in Department of Biotechnology at Graphic Era Deemed to be University, Uttarakhand, India. Prior to joining GEU, She served as Associate Professor and HOD, Biotechnology and President, MHRD Institute Innovation cell affiliated to Ministry of Education, at IILM College of Engineering and Technology, Greater Noida. She worked in her previous organization for 13 years before joining GEU in 2021. Dr. Pallavi has worked as NBA coordinator of Biotechnology in 2018 and has been a veteran in accreditation with previous association as member in NBA process in 2009 and 2013 in IILM. In GEU, she worked as NBA coordinator in 2022 and Department of Biotechnology successfully obtained NBA in 2022. Dr. Pallavi has organized many National conferences, AICTE funded FDPs, Guest lectures, Student training programs and has obtained funding from reputed national organizations like ICMR, AICTE etc. for conferences and FDPs. She has published over 38 research papers in reputed National and International journals which includes journals like International Journal of Surgery, Frontiers in Microbiology, Current Issues in Molecular Biology, Computational Toxicology, Journal of Nanomaterials etc. She has further published 2 Books, 5 Book chapters along with many International and National conference presentations. Further, She has published 5 patents in the domain of computational biology and Bioprocess Engineering. One of her Indian design patents has recently been granted in 2023. Dr. Pallavi serves as member of Editorial board and Reviewer in journals like International Journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology, International Journal of Advanced Research and Development, many Bentham journals

+For a fresh graduate who is gearing up to enter the workforce, the economic crisis can cause forced lowering of expectations. What it means is that qualified candidates might have to settle for poor career start as they cannot afford to be choosy or selective in a volatile job market that offers scarce employment opportunities. The first job role may be such that does not offer much scope of training or promotion and even cause them to incur initial earning losses. Research shows that recession graduates/freshers have accepted jobs that may not be the best match for their skills out of desperation in the past. Some studies even say that graduates of the recession gave up the hope of securing employment and stopped looking for job altogether, discouraged by the dismal state of labour market in the turbulent times. Recession graduates have to struggle hard with underemployment. Fresh graduates including those who did not begin their professional journey with small or lower paying firms have felt that their salaries remained static for a long time. Recession graduates often try to make up for the delay in their career goals by switching jobs more frequently. However, success in this regard remains largely dependent on the speed at which the market recovers after the economic downturn.

+Dr. Singh’s current research focuses on the intricate relationships of plant-microbe interaction. The co-evolution of plants and microbes over centuries has resulted in complex species-specific interconnections of different microbiota with a plant that not only helps to sustain the soil environment but also promotes the growth of plants by nutrient acquisition from the soil, nitrogen fixation, phosphate availability, phytohormone, and antimicrobial production. Such associations also help the host plant in ameliorating biotic and abiotic stresses. His current research focuses on deciphering the role of such microbes in plant growth promotion and the accumulation of secondary metabolites. His lab currently hosts 3 Ph.D. scholars working on different aspects of plant-microbe interaction and abiotic stress tolerance in plants.
