## Are We Approaching a Point Where Data Quality Matters More Than Model Size?

Over the past few years, much of the AI industry's attention has focused on scaling: larger models, more compute, and increasingly massive training datasets.

But an interesting question is emerging: **How much further can we get by improving the quality of training data rather than simply increasing its quantity?**

A smaller model trained on carefully curated, diverse, and high-quality data may outperform a significantly larger model on certain specialized tasks.

Synthetic data, reinforcement learning, and improved data filtering are also changing how we think about model development.

Perhaps the next major breakthrough in AI won't come exclusively from adding more parameters, but from fundamentally improving how models learn and generalize.

**Curious what others think: Is data quality becoming a bigger competitive advantage than raw compute?**

Data quality is the right question. The catch is who measures it.

In most curation pipelines now, "high quality" means an LLM filter said so.

We re-ran one LLM labelling step with identical calls, caching off, on 8 open model variants.
Mean agreement between repeated calls ranged from Jaccard 0.39 to 0.96.
72% of prompt-model cells never came back identical.

So a quality label can move on a re-run with nothing changed.
Before quality beats scale, the quality score has to hold still.

How would you grade a curated set without a model in the loop?
