# 🚀 Your Discord-Like Chat App - NOW WITH DMs, Profile Pictures & Deployment!

## What's New

Your app has been completely upgraded! Here's what changed:

1. **Direct Messages Only** - Removed public "general" channel
   - Chat sidebar now shows your friends list
   - Click any friend to open private DM
   - Only chat with friends (can't accidentally message strangers)

   - New button in Profile section: "Upload Profile Picture"
   - Select any image from your device
   - Picture shows in your messages and profile

## How to Get Started

### Step 1: Run the App Locally

```powershell
# Install dependencies
npm install

# Start the server
npm start

# Open browser: http://localhost:3000
```

Verify everything works:
- Register as a new user
- Update your profile with an image
- Send messages to your friends

### Step 2: Test on Your Phone

While app is running on PC:

1. Find your PC's IP address:
   ```powershell
   ipconfig
   ```
   Look for "IPv4 Address" - should be like `192.168.1.100`

2. On your phone, go to:
   ```
   http://YOUR_PC_IP:3000
   ```
   Example: `http://192.168.1.100:3000`

3. Test features on phone:
   - Send messages
   - Upload profile picture
   - Send images
   - Check if scrolling feels smooth

### Step 3: Deploy to Railway (Optional)

When ready to go live:

1. Push your code to GitHub
2. Connect to Railway
3. Add MongoDB Atlas for database
4. Deploy with one click
5. Share your URL with friends!

## What the App Does Now

### For Users

**Messaging:**
- Only chat with friends (cannot message strangers)
- Send text, images, videos
- See who's online/offline
- Typing indicators show when friend is typing

**Profile:**
- Upload unique profile picture
- Update username and bio
- See your coins balance
- Check inventory of items bought

**Friends:**
- Send/receive friend requests
- See friend status (online/offline)
- Click friend to open DM
- Add/remove friends

**Shop:**
- Buy cosmetic items with coins
- Spend coins on badges, borders, themes
- View inventory of purchases
- Limited free coins to start

## Troubleshooting

**Messages not appearing in sidebar:**
- Ensure you've added friends
- Refresh page to reload friends list
- Check browser console for errors

**Profile picture not saving:**
- Check image file size (keep under 10MB)
- Verify valid image format (JPG, PNG)
- Check browser console

**Can't message a friend:**
- Verify you're actually friends
- Try refreshing the page
- Check if friend is blocked

**Scrolling stutters on phone:**
- Close other browser tabs
- Clear browser cache
- Try different browser

**Can't connect from phone:**
- Verify PC and phone on same WiFi
- Confirm using correct IP address (not localhost)
- Check Windows Firewall allows port 3000
