# App Update Summary - DM-Only with Profile Images & Deployment

## Overview

Your Discord-like chat application has been completely updated with the following improvements:

1. **DM-Only Messaging** - Removed public channels, replaced with friend-based direct messaging
2.  **Profile Image Upload** - Users can now upload and customize profile pictures
3.  **Improved Scrolling** - Added smooth scrolling, better scrollbars, and mobile optimization
4.  **Railway Deployment Guide** - Complete guide to deploy your app for free
5.  **Phone Testing Guide** - Instructions for testing on mobile devices

## What Changed

### Backend (server.js)

**New Features:**
- Added `DirectMessage` schema for storing DMs between users
- Added `/api/profile/upload` endpoint for profile image uploads
- Added `/api/dms/:friendId` endpoint to retrieve messages with a friend
- Added `/api/dms` POST endpoint to send messages
- Updated Socket.IO to use DM rooms instead of channels
- Socket.IO events changed from channel-based to DM-specific

**Socket.IO Events (Updated):**
- `join` - User joins with authentication
- `join dm` - Join a DM room with a friend
- `leave dm` - Leave a DM room
- `send dm` - Send a direct message
- `dm typing` - Typing indicator for DMs
- `dm stop typing` - Stop typing indicator
- `dm message` - Receive a DM (listener)
- `dm user typing` - Typing indicator received (listener)
- `dm user stop typing` - Stop typing received (listener)

### Frontend (client.js)

**Major Changes:**
- Replaced `currentChannel` with `currentChatFriendId` and `currentChatFriendName`
- Removed `showChannel()` function
- Added `openDM(friendId, friendName)` to open a friend's chat
- Added `loadDMMessages(friendId)` to load previous DM history
- Added `loadFriendsForDM()` to display friends as DM list
- Updated `sendMessage()` to send DMs instead of channel messages
- Updated `loadFriends()` to allow clicking friends to open DMs
- Added `uploadProfileImage()` for profile picture upload
- Updated Socket.IO listeners for DM events
- Added typing indicators for DMs

### UI (index.html)

**Major Changes:**
- Changed sidebar header from "Channels" to "Messages"
- Removed hardcoded "general" and "Voice Chat" channels
- DM list is now dynamically populated from friends
- Added typing indicator display below messages
- Added profile image upload button with file input
- Added scrollbar styling for better visuals
- Updated chat title to show friend name (e.g., "💬 Alice")

**CSS Improvements:**
- Added `scroll-behavior: smooth` for smooth scrolling
- Added custom scrollbar styling
- Added scroll-snap for better scroll positioning
- Added `-webkit-overflow-scrolling: touch` for mobile momentum scrolling
- Added fade-in animations for new messages

## How to Use

### For Users

1. **Messaging Friends:**
   - Go to Chat section
   - Your friends list appears on the left
   - Click a friend to open their DM
   - Type and send messages
   - Can send images and videos

2. **Profile Picture:**
   - Click your profile icon (top right)
   - Go to "Profile" tab
   - Click "Upload Profile Picture"
   - Select an image from your device
   - Picture updates immediately

### DirectMessage Model
- `messageId` - Unique message ID
- `from` - Sender user ID
- `to` - Recipient user ID
- `fromUsername` - Sender's username
- `toUsername` - Recipient's username
- `content` - Message text
- `mediaType` - text, image, video, emoji
- `mediaUrl` - Base64 encoded media
- `timestamp` - When message was sent
- `readBy` - Array of users who read it

### User Model (Updated)
- `avatar` - Profile picture (base64 encoded)
- `friends` - Array of friend IDs
- `status` - online, offline, away
- Plus existing: username, email, password, bio, coins

## Known Limitations

1. **Media Storage:** Images/videos stored as base64 in database (limits size)
2. **Message History:** All messages loaded at once (slow with many messages)
3. **No Message Encryption:** Messages stored in plain text
4. **File Size Limit:** Multer set to 50MB
5. **No Message Reactions:** Not implemented yet

## Troubleshooting

### DMs not appearing
- Ensure users are friends
- Check database connection
- Verify Socket.IO is connected

### Profile picture not saving
- Check file size (< 10MB recommended)
- Verify image format is supported
- Check MongoDB storage quota

### Messages not scrolling
- Try hardRefresh (Ctrl+F5)
- Clear cache
- Check browser console for errors

### Phone can't connect
- Verify same WiFi network
- Confirm correct IP address
- Check firewall settings
