short_description: Generate playable D&D NPCs with motives, voices, and hooks

# Free D&D NPC Generator
This Space is a free **DnD NPC generator** built for the person who actually has to
run the character: the Dungeon Master. Give it a role, a demeanor, or nothing at all,
and it generates a complete, table-ready NPC β not a name and three adjectives, but a
character you can perform, with a motive that drives scenes and hooks that connect
them to your campaign.
## What it generates
Every result is a structured NPC sheet:
- **Name and role title** β "Weigh-Clerk of the Salt Exchange", not "merchant"
- **Appearance** you can read aloud to the table
- **A performable voice and mannerism** β a specific accent, cadence, and physical
tic the DM can actually do, never "sounds mysterious"
- **Personality and motivation** β how they treat strangers and what they want right now
- **A secret** the party doesn't know, built to surface in play
- **Named relationships** β two or three specific connections with the current state
of each
- **A quote** in their voice, so you can hear them before you play them
- **Exactly three plot hooks** β concrete scenes and complications involving this NPC
- **A stat suggestion** naming which SRD block to borrow ("use Commoner; if pressed,
Spy")
- **A three-sentence quick reference** for the DM screen
Output is rendered as Markdown with one-click copy and a `.md` download, so it drops
straight into Obsidian, Notion, or your prep notes.
## Inputs
Role or occupation, race/species, importance (Background, Recurring, or Major),
location or context, demeanor, campaign setting, what the party needs from them, and
free-form notes. **Every field is optional** β blanks become creative freedom, and the
Surprise Me button rolls a role, race, importance, and demeanor for you. The
importance setting scales the output: Background NPCs get small local hooks,
Recurring NPCs get agendas that advance between meetings, and Major NPCs get
campaign-relevant secrets built to escalate across an arc.
## Example
> **Maren Dunmore** β *Keeper of the Ninth Lock, Greywater Canal.* A gruff
> lock-keeper who tolls the smugglers running her canal at night and banks every coin
> to buy the lock before the Canal Trust sells it. She drops the ends of her
> sentences and taps her key ring against the rail β twice for the truth, three times
> when she's lying. Her hidden logbook of every night run makes her dangerous to half
> the harbor. Hooks include a flooded night-passage offered at an unnamed price and a
> syndicate quietly buying up her son's gambling debts.
The full version of this example β with all structured fields β is on the page below
the generator.
## Using generated NPCs at the table
Anchor the voice to the physical tic (you'll forget an accent mid-scene; you won't
forget tapping keys), play the motivation rather than a script when players go
off-book, and hold the three hooks until the party wants something β hooks land
hardest when the party walks into them. Reuse NPCs across sessions and campaigns: a
recurring face with an advancing agenda makes a world feel alive faster than three
new strangers. The page below the tool includes fuller guidance on running, tracking,
and promoting NPCs your players adopt.
## AI output disclaimer
NPCs are AI-generated drafts. Review them, edit freely, and adapt anything that
doesn't fit your table or setting. This is an unofficial fan tool: Dungeons & Dragons

or endorsed by Wizards of the Coast.
## Built by Loreify
This generator is built and maintained by [Loreify](https://loreify.ai), the AI
session scribe for D&D groups: record or upload your session audio and Loreify turns
it into organized notes β NPCs, quests, loot, locations, and lore β automatically.
Your NPC starts here; [Loreify](https://loreify.ai/start-trial?utm_source=huggingface&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=dnd_npc_generator&utm_content=readme)
remembers everything that happens when they meet the party. 7-day free trial.
