# Free D&D Random Encounter Generator

This Space is a free **DnD random encounter generator** that rolls one complete,
ready-to-run scene β€” not a line from a d100 table, and not a multi-scene quest. Pick
an environment, tell it your party's level and size, choose how dangerous it should
feel, and it generates a single encounter a Dungeon Master can run cold: setup,
creatures with counts, motivation, terrain, a mid-scene complication, and what the
party gets out of winning, talking, or running.

## What it generates

Every result is a structured encounter sheet:

- **A title and encounter type** β€” "Combat β€” ambush," "Social β€” tense parley" β€” so
you know the shape of the scene at a glance
- **The setup** β€” what the party perceives first, written to be nearly read aloud
- **Composition with counts and SRD stat blocks** β€” not "some bandits" but
"3 bandits (Bandit) led by a veteran (Veteran)," in numbers sane for your party's
level, size, and the difficulty you asked for
- **Motivation** β€” why these creatures are here, now, doing this; random placement
is fine, but random purpose reads as filler
- **Terrain and features** β€” two or three tactical details the scene can use
- **A complication** that lands mid-scene, so the encounter has a second act
- **Scaling notes** β€” one line to make it easier, one to make it harder
- **Outcome and treasure** for every exit: winning, negotiating, and fleeing
- **A follow-up hook** β€” one loose thread small enough to ignore and sharp enough to
  become next month's session

Output is rendered as Markdown with one-click copy and a `.md` download, so it drops
straight into Obsidian, Notion, or your prep notes.

## Inputs

Environment (thirteen presets from Forest to Planar, or type your own), party level
(1–20), party size (2–7), encounter flavor (Combat, Social, Exploration, or Mixed),
difficulty feel (Easy to Deadly), time of day, and free-form notes. **Every field is
optional** β€” blanks become creative freedom, and the Surprise Me button rolls the
environment, level, flavor, and time of day for you. Roll Again rerolls with the same
inputs until the scene feels right.

## Example

> **False Lanterns on the Drowned Causeway** β€” *Mixed β€” deception, hazard, and a
> bargain.* A night forest road drops into flooded bottomland, where two warm
> "lantern lights" bob exactly where a search party would be. They are 2 will-o'-wisps
> (Will-o'-Wisp) herding travelers toward Grelka Ninefingers, a bog hag (use Green
> Hag) ringed by 3 shriekers (Shrieker) β€” and Grelka would much rather bargain with a
> healthy, armed party than fight one. Rotten causeway planks, light-swallowing black
> water, and a half-drowned merchant surfacing mid-scene turn one roll into a real
> decision.

The full version of this example β€” with all structured fields β€” is on the page below
the generator.

## Making random encounters feel non-random

The generator includes a motivation in every result because that's the difference
between an encounter and an interruption. The page below the tool covers the craft:
tying motivations into your region so one roll deepens the world, letting the
complication interact with the terrain, knowing when to skip an encounter entirely,
and using difficulty feel as a pacing valve β€” an Easy social scene to let the table
breathe, a Hard night ambush to wake a travel montage up.

If you need more than one scene, our [D&D Quest
Generator](https://huggingface.co/spaces/Jordancole21/dnd-quest-generator) builds
multi-scene arcs β€” a rolled encounter's follow-up hook is exactly the kind of thread
it can grow.

## AI output disclaimer

Encounters are AI-generated drafts. Review them, check the numbers against your
table's actual strength, and adapt anything that doesn't fit your setting. This is an
unofficial fan tool: Dungeons & Dragons is a trademark of Wizards of the Coast LLC,
and this project is not affiliated with or endorsed by Wizards of the Coast.

## Built by Loreify

This generator is built and maintained by [Loreify](https://loreify.ai), the AI
session scribe for D&D groups: record or upload your session audio and Loreify turns
it into organized notes β€” NPCs, quests, loot, locations, and lore β€” automatically.
Your encounter starts here; [Loreify](https://loreify.ai/start-trial?utm_source=huggingface&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=dnd_random_encounter_generator&utm_content=readme)
remembers how the ambush actually went. 7-day free trial.
