I don't believe I've ever tested a laptop with the same comfort level as MSI's machine.\n\nSpeaking of the display, it's important to mention that it is a 2.8K OLED screen. The image quality is stunning, the colors are exceptionally vibrant, and everything looks crystal clear. I loved the display; however, I did have one problem with it. The bezels around the glass are too thick, encroaching on the screen's space. The display is already small at 13.3 inches, but the thick bars surrounding it make the screen feel even smaller.\n\nThis problem became noticeable when I opened a new document on Google Docs and was greeted by what seemed to be a cramped window layout. Even when I hid portions of the tab I was on, everything still looked cluttered. It would've been great if MSI had put the 5MP webcam into a lip jutting out from the top of the display; doing so would've given the OLED screen more room.\n\nWorking on a 13-inch display is something that takes getting used to, and adjusting to a higher resolution is one way around the smaller physical space. However, that results in smaller text and icons, something not everyone will feel is a trade-off that's worth it.\n\nAlso: I tested Acer's new business-friendly Chromebook and it nails all the essentials for pro users\n\nIn order to test its performance, I ran the Prestige 13 through a series of tasks. I opened as many windows, tabs, and apps as I could to see if there would be any slowdown -- and there was. The laptop froze a few times as it struggled to support everything, although it quickly returned to normal after a few seconds. \n\nOther tests involved running benchmarking apps, and the results were impressive. On PCMark 10, the laptop initially earned a high score of 6,333. The app showed the computer does very well when performing general office workloads.\n\nMSI's Prestige 13 also has a wealth of AI features, the most impressive of which is the MSI Center app. The software houses several tools that can tweak the device's performance, with the most impactful being Extreme Performance. Activating the mode pushes the laptop as hard as it can go, and the boost makes a notable difference.\n\nAlso: This Asus has one of the best OLED displays I've seen, and I've tested hundreds of laptops\n\nI put MSI's model through PCMark 10 again while under Extreme Performance. The second test score jumped to 6,697, and the Digital Content Creation results were boosted significantly. This means the Center app allows the Prestige 13 to become more capable of editing and rendering videos. It expands the device's use cases into areas it normally isn't able to tackle as well. The one downside with the mode is that it immediately turns on the cooling fans, turning a quiet laptop into a noisy one. Trade-in programme lifts retail sales to 4-month high\nChina\u2019s retail sales rose in September by 3.2 per cent, year on year, compared with the 2.1 per cent growth seen in August, hitting a four-month high.\nThe notable improvement in retail sales last month was attributed to the ongoing consumer goods trade-in programme, according to analysts at Goldman Sachs.\n\u201cWhile this remains a far cry from previous years, the uptick was nonetheless higher than we and markets expected and brings the year-to-date retail sales growth to 3.3 per cent year on year,\u201d said Lynn Song, chief economist for Greater China at ING.\n\nHousehold appliances grew by 20.5 per cent year on year, which marked the strongest year-on-year growth of any category in September, added Song.\nCar sales also bounced back to 0.4 per cent year on year, \u201cwhich does not appear particularly impressive at first glance, but is worth highlighting due to turning positive after being in negative growth for the prior six months,\u201d he said.\n3. Property market the \u2018biggest drag\u2019\nProperty investment fell by 10.1 per cent, year on year, in the first nine months of 2024 after a 10.2 per cent decline in the first eight months.\n\u201cThe property market unsurprisingly remains the biggest drag on China\u2019s growth,\u201d added Song at ING.\nAnd Betty Wang, lead economist at Oxford Economics, said the property sector was not showing any signs of stabilising.\n\u201cProperty prices, investment, and home sales extended their downtrend in September. Demand deficiency in the household sector needs a continuous policy framework focused on improving the job market outlook, raising income levels and improving the social security net,\u201d she said.\n\n4. Fixed-asset growth increases modestly\nChina\u2019s overall fixed-asset investment grew by 3.4 per cent in the first nine months of the year, unchanged from the first eight months, while private investment fell 0.2 per cent during the January-September period.\n\u201cFixed-asset investment growth increased modestly to growth of 3.4 per cent year on year in September from growth of 2.1 per cent year on year in August on a single month basis, on the back of faster government bond issuance in recent months, although the prolonged property downturn remains a drag,\u201d said analysts at Goldman Sachs.\n5. \u2018Meaningful\u2019 increase in industrial output\nChina\u2019s industrial output grew by 5.4 per cent last month from a year earlier following a 4.5 per cent rise in August, hitting a four-month high.\n\u201cIndustrial production growth rose meaningfully\u201d last month, according to analysts at Goldman Sachs.\nHi-tech manufacturing built upon recent strength, rising to 10.1 per cent year on year, up from 8.6 per cent the previous month, according to Song at ING.\nThe same categories from previous months continued to drive overall manufacturing, he added, pointing to semiconductors, computers, communications, and electric equipment, and rail, ships, and aeroplanes, which \u201chave all been consistently outperforming throughout the year\u201d.\n6. Urban unemployment rate eases slightly\nChina\u2019s overall urban unemployment rate stood at 5.1 per cent in September, compared with 5.3 per cent in August.\n\n7. China\u2019s \u2018annual growth target under pressure\u2019\nAnalysts at Goldman Sachs expected China\u2019s GDP growth to accelerate in the fourth quarter due to the recent policy easing, with their forecast for 2024 unchanged at between 4.7 to 4.9 per cent.\nAnd Coface\u2019s Tan said the \u201csoft reading puts the annual growth target under pressure, as the economy will have to post a sharp quarterly rebound of about 1.5 per cent in the final quarter\u201d.\n\u201cBut the cyclical trough appears to have bottomed out with broad-based improvements across the consumption, production and investment in September,\u201d he added.\nHuang at Capital Economics, meanwhile, said China\u2019s economic recovery remained \u201con shaky foundations\u201d.\nThis should ensure that the annual growth target is narrowly met this year and growth ticks up in the coming quarters\nZichun Huang, Capital Economics\n\u201cThe housing market is still in the doldrums, with sales volumes still edging down and home prices continuing to drop. Thursday\u2019s real estate press conference unveiled few new measures, which on their own are unlikely to drive a significant turnaround in the sector and broader economic activity,\u201d he said.\n\u201cA lot will therefore depend on the implementation of fiscal support.
