Chat Agent: genuinely agentic RAG for OpenAI (tool-calling loop, not single-shot)
Browse filesReplaces the old "always pre-retrieve top-6 chunks, then answer once" flow
(for the default OpenAI provider) with a real agentic loop: the model gets
a search_knowledge_base tool and decides per-turn whether to search at all,
can chain a second refined search for hard multi-part questions, and can
hint which source (Drive vs. website) is more likely to have the answer
(now a real source_filter on retrieval, not cosmetic).
Kept fast on purpose: runs with stream=True through the whole loop, so a
question that needs no search streams live starting on the very first
call (no added latency vs. the old design); tool-call rounds are silent
internally (local, in-process retrieval, no network) and only the round
that actually produces the answer is forwarded to the client. Bounded to
MAX_SEARCH_ROUNDS=2 (3 LLM calls worst case) so latency stays predictable
-- verified the cap is real by confirming `tools` is absent from the API
call on the forced final round, not just coincidentally unused.
Skills.md (compile_skills_md) is still injected as a non-negotiable
guardrail block, now explicitly scoped to also govern how the model uses
the tool and treats its results, not just its final wording -- otherwise
a skill like "don't share pricing" could be bypassed by just repeating
back whatever a search result contains.
Gemini (secondary/optional provider) is deliberately left on the original
single-shot RAG path, unchanged -- not worth a parallel agentic
implementation for a rarely-used path right now. Regression-tested.
Verified: 4 scenarios on the core loop (no-search / single-search /
two-search / cap-enforced), source-hint propagation, forced-round tools
are genuinely disabled, Skills.md renders correctly in the new prompt, a
full HTTP+SSE round-trip through the real routes (citation link streams
and persists correctly, exactly 2 LLM calls), and the Gemini path
regression check -- all passing. No frontend changes needed; the SSE
contract (delta/error/[DONE]) is unchanged.

Chat Agent conversational engine.
|
| 3 |

|
| 4 |

Two reply strategies:
|
| 5 |
+
- OpenAI (default provider): a genuinely agentic loop — the model decides for itself whether a
|
| 6 |
+
question needs a knowledge-base search at all, can issue a second, refined search for hard
|
| 7 |
+
multi-part questions, and can hint which source (Drive vs. website) is more likely to have the
|
| 8 |
+
answer. Implemented with OpenAI tool-calling (`search_knowledge_base`), bounded to
|
| 9 |
+
MAX_SEARCH_ROUNDS so latency stays predictable, and run with streaming enabled the whole time —
|
| 10 |
+
when the model doesn't need to search, its answer streams live starting on the very first call
|
| 11 |
+
(zero added latency over the old single-shot design); tool-call rounds are silent internally and
|
| 12 |
+
only the round that actually produces the answer streams to the visitor.
|
| 13 |
+
- Gemini (opt-in alternate provider): the original single-shot RAG path — retrieve once, answer
|
| 14 |
+
once. Kept simple/unchanged since it's a secondary, optional path.
|
| 15 |
+
|
| 16 |
+
Skills.md (compiled by chat_agent_common.compile_skills_md) is injected as a non-negotiable
|
| 17 |
+
guardrail block in BOTH system prompts, and — for the agentic path — explicitly still applies to
|
| 18 |
+
how the model uses the search tool and treats its results, not just the final wording.
