We combine computer science and linguistics to analyze and process human language, with a strong empirical orientation emphasizing multilingual systems, dependency parsing, and digital humanities. ## Research & Subject Areas Our research is driven by both theoretical goals—understanding human language processing—and practical applications in Natural Language Processing (NLP). Key focus areas include: * **Multilingual NLP:** Cross-lingual transfer learning and typologically diverse language modeling. * **Syntax & Parsing:** Development of algorithms for grammatical analysis, with a special focus on dependency-based parsing. * **Digital Philology:** Computational methods for historical texts, including handwriting recognition and cipher decoding. * **Machine Translation:** Neural machine translation and discourse-oriented translation models. ## Key Resources & Projects We are actively involved in the development of several major community resources and tools: * **[Universal Dependencies (UD)](https://universaldependencies.org/):** Uppsala is a founding node of this open community effort to create cross-linguistically consistent treebank annotation for over 100 languages. * **[MaltParser](http://www.maltparser.org/):** A data-driven parser-generator for dependency parsing. * **[Swe-CLARIN](https://sweclarin.se/):** As a partner in the Common Language Resources and Technology Infrastructure, we develop and maintain tools for digital humanities research. * **Historical Corpora & Models:** * *UU_SwedishNovels_1800-1940*: A corpus of Swedish literary novels. * *SOU-corpus*: Processed versions of Swedish Government Official Reports. * *DECODE*: Automatic decoding of historical manuscripts. ## About the Group The Computational Linguistics group fosters a vibrant international environment with professors, researchers, and doctoral students. We offer a specialized **Master’s Programme in Language Technology** and participate heavily in the global NLP research community. ## Contact & More Information * **Website:** [uu.se/en/department/linguistics-and-philology](https://www.uu.se/en/department/linguistics-and-philology) * **GitHub:** [github.com/UppsalaNLP](https://github.com/UppsalaNLP) * **Location:** Uppsala, Sweden
