+ 제목Chiba University “Wholeheartedly Thanks CBNU for Earthquake Relief Support” 국제교류부 | 2011-09-09 | 조회 3299본문 내용  “We would like to sincerely thank Chonbuk National University for its generous donations for the earthquake that hit Japan last March.” Chiba University, which received a great degree of damage from the powerful earthquakes, recently thanked CBNU for its compassion and support. Department of Nursing Professor Iwasaki, Director of International Affairs Gomita and Chief of Study Abroad Support Tateisi were joined by President Saito and Vice-President Watanabe on August 30th, 3:30 PM, to greet President Geo-Suk Suh and express their gratitude for the delivery of relief funds.  President Saito was especially grateful because Chiba’s University first established sisterhood relationship with a Korean university was CBNU. He said he wanted to continue the close friendship between the two universities. President Saito said “The massive earthquake in March affected all of us and I can only thank our sister university, Chonbuk National University, for their charity and kindness. He added, “The donations you have sent us will be used to help students affected by the earthquake, and will help them get back on their feet so that they can resume their academic endeavors.”  President Saito added, “Chonbuk National University was the first Korean sister university we forged in 2004, so this relationship is very meaningful to us. This visit will only make the bond and exchange between our two universities stronger.  President Suh replied, “We would like to offer words of consolation for the earthquake damage that affected Chiba University. Since we are Chiba University’s first Korean sister university, we will try harder to maintain the close relationship we have established. Chiba University was founded in 1949. Currently they are placed 51st in Top Asian University Rankings and in the top 250 in the World University Rankings as assessed by Quacquarelli Symonds(QS). Chiba University boasts 1,223 faculty members, 609 employees, and a student body of approximately 14,000. Since the establishment of the sisterhood relationship with CBNU in 2004, the two universities have exchanged 20 students each year.   00치바대학_사이토_총장이_서거석_총장에게_지진피해_도움에_감사하는_감사패를_전달했다_1.jpgCount : 26408622 K

+ 제목CBNU 1st among Regional Universities in Research Contracts, Research Funds per person 국제교류부 | 2011-10-19 | 조회 3485본문 내용 “Research Competitiveness = CBNU” - This is a statement that will now become synonymous with our university.  The Ministry of Education recently gathered data from the Center for Higher Education Information Disclosure and published their findings in “total research funds” and “research fund per faculty member.” CBNU came out on top among regional universities for both categories. Our university also surpassed numerous distinguished universities in the capital area and other regional core universities to finish 8th nationally in research funding, validating our status as one of the strongest research universities in the nation.  According to information published by the Higher Education Information in Korea (heik.academyinfo.go.kr), our university accumulated approximately 117.5 billion won in research funds and outshined schools like Pusan National University, Kyungpook National University and Chonnam National University.  In the category of research fund granted per faculty member, our university’s 1,016 professors were provided on average of 15.64 million won per person, which, once again, was 1st among universities in the region.   Our university was also first among the regional core universities to surpass 100 billion won in research contracts and this year, research grants increased by 20 billion won from last year, demonstrating the avid research activity of our university professors.  Even with universities located in bigger economies like Daegu (Gyeongsangbuk-Do), Daejeon (Chungcheongnam-Do) and Gwangju (Jeollanam-Do), our university surpassed all other regional core universities by a large margin and lived up to its reputable track record in research.  After CBNU became first to surpass 100 billion won in research funds, our university has been frequently acknowledged for its research program strength. This is attributable to a combination of tireless efforts to increase research competitiveness by our university staff, the equally diligent dedication of professors, and the thorough communication between members of our university.  Since President Geo-Suk Suh’s appointment in 2006, our university implemented a strategic plan to increase university competitiveness through research competitiveness. Our school’s research programs have received full-fledged support ever since.   Our university expanded its research support system through the years. Requirement for job advancement have become twice as much meticulous, but professors now receive 100 million won if any of their research papers are published in one of the “Big Three” academic Journals (Science, Nature, Cells). Professors conducting research are also given some relief from teaching classes and assigned with student research assistants to provide help in their research.  Starting in 2007, our university has also been active in promoting research activity and providing a research environment that is suitable even for outside institutions and corporations President Suh said, “We faced some challenges in the beginning, but with our staff’s positive attitude and our professors’ ardent efforts we have been able to enjoy great accolades from our research programs. We will continue to work harder so that the term ‘research competitiveness’ becomes synonymous with CBNU.” 00학교_전경.jpgCount : 36496895 K

+ 제목College students rise against pro Japanese collaborationism Admin | 2005-05-03 | 조회 4284본문 내용 By Lee Ah-rum, Reporter
2
+ After a Japanese local council designated "Takeshima (Dokdo) Day" last March, anti-Japanese sentiment has surged inside Koreans. Since then the Japanese Ministry of Education authorized some problematic history textbooks that not only claim Dokdo as Japanese territory, but also justify its invasion of Asian countries in the 19th century. This matter over the distorted history textbook has also fueled anti-Japanese sentiment among Koreans. Meanwhile, an incredible incident happened: Hahn Sung-joe, who used to be a professor at Korea University, wrote an article praising the 35-year Japanese colonial rule on the Korean peninsula. How could a Korean professor, not a Japanese, write such a stupid story? Hahn's claim incited anger among Korean citizens. Also, it caused Korean college students to realize that it is most urgent and important to remove pro-Japanese collaborationists during the 1910-1945 period from Korean society.
3
+
4
+ Last March 30, students from seven universities, including Chonbuk, Korea, Seoul, and Ewha, had a meeting in front of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul, in which they formed a "college student movement body for protection of national independence, expulsion of Japanese ambassador to Korea, and eradication of pro-Japanese collaborators." Several days later, on April 4, students from 13 universities located in the Seoul area held a ceremony in front of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul to set out the student movement body. That day, they designated May 9 and 19 as days to censure Japan for its approval of controversial history textbooks. They have since launched a ten million signature campaign to deprive pro-Japanese activists, conducting a boycott of products made in Japan.
5
+
6
+ On April 14, Chonbuk University's General Students Association held a press conference on the university's Notification Street (알림의 거리). In the conference, they announced the inauguration of the Jeonbuk center for the student movement to root out pro-Japanese collaborationists. Also, they stated that they would actively persuade Geonjians to participate in a signature campaign to eradicate pro-Japanese collaborators and to boycott Japanese merchandise.
7
+
8
+ However, on the contrary to some university students' passionate anti-Japanese activities, the majority of college students were revealed to think that though a person worked for Japanese imperialism, we should give him or her credit for his or her achievements, according to a recent survey conducted by the Internet university news website "unews" (http//:www.unews.co.kr).
9
+
10
+ When reporters from The Chonbuk Herald asked what the eradication of pro-Japanese collaborators means, Professor Jeong Cheol-hee from the social science department, said: "The removal of pro-Japanese collaborationism is to establish a correct history so that Koreans should never do such extreme pro-Japanese activities again as they did during the colonial period." Professor Jeong asked college students to study Korean modern history and understand it correctly.
11
+
12
+ "It is positively necessary to root out pro-Japanese collaborationists in order to block the revival of Japanese militarism and secure peace in East Asia," stressed Park Sang-jun, a staff member from a movement organization for eradication of pro-Japanese collaborators. "We should realize that pro-Japanese activities are not just a matter of the past. That is a matter of the present. This awareness is the first step to root out pro-Japanese collaborators."

+ 제목ACE Project Promotions Committee Dedicated to Improving Undergraduate Education 국제교류부 | 2011-11-04 | 조회 3635본문 내용 “Strengthening academic concentration through a firm foundation in core curriculums, this is our university’s responsibility.” After being selected last May as an ACE Project awardee and singled out as Korea’s best teaching university by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Education, CBNU held a ceremony celebrating the formation of the ACE Project Promotions Committee on October 18th, 5 PM. The purpose of the committee is to carry out the objectives of the ACE project and improve the undergraduate education system.  On this day, President Geo-Suk Suh, Chair of the Promotions Committee and Dean of Academic Affairs Young Jeong Kim, and the rest of the committee members promised to formulate and implement a distinctly progressive educational model for undergraduate students. Our university received nearly 12 billion won in funding from the Ministry of Education and will embark on the ACE project for four years until the year 2015. With Dean of Academic Affairs Young Jeong Kim as the Committee Chair, the committee is composed of 40 members and 14 sub-committees that fall under the umbrella of three main Task Force teams: The Educational System Development Team, Curriculum Development Team, and Ranking and Evaluation System Development Team. Our university aims to refine an educational model that strengthens academic concentration through a firm foundation in core curriculums through the ACE Project and will begin its implementation with next year’s newly admitted students. Recently, students have shown a lack of familiarity with key subject matters and this new educational model will instill a solid foundation in basic study areas to provide a seamless transition into academic majors and concentrations.  In order to strengthen core curriculums and academic concentrations, our university will be the first national university in Korea to adopt a “four semester system,” where students with poor grades will have to attend four extended course modules (winter, spring, summer and fall) in one academic year. The “2+2 semester system,” in which a four-year course load is divided into two years of core curriculums and two years of academic concentration studies, will also fortify the education system at CBNU.  Another goal is to establish clear pre-requisite course structures and increase the number of classes divided according to skill level from 3 to 10 classes, as well as expand on the development of class material and media contents.  There are plans to reorganize the current curriculum and create a Major Intensity Track(department qualifications, interdisciplinary majors) to strengthen academic concentration studies.  CBNU especially believes in maintaining and improving upon the quality of education and expects the Ranking and Evaluation System Team to play a particularly big role in this matter.  The Ranking and Evaluation System Team plans to develop teaching and course feedback systems, basic education and core competence certification evaluation tools, student management programs for students on academic probation, and education satisfaction assessment systems. In addition, our university will expand on a variety of extracurricular programs like local community outreach and social service programs, as well as career guidance activities.  Courses like career management and career development camp will be mandatory courses and the same principles of strengthening core curriculums will be applied to the increasing number of international students at our university. On this day President Suh remarked, “Today we commemorate the foundation of the ACE Project Promotions Committee and take the first step to being recognized as the best and most competitive university in Korea. From this day forward we will have the most advanced and progressive education program in the nation.”  00ACE사업_추진단_개소식_기념촬영.jpgCount : 37413120 K

+ 제목CBNU at the Center of Hanok Construction Education 국제교류부 | 2011-12-13 | 조회 3928본문 내용 The Hanok enterprise, which is part of a broader “Han Style” enterprise, is currently facing financial burdens and a slow rate of progress despite continuous support from the city of Jeonju. One of the impediments to progress is the lack of trained professionals in Hanok design and construction. Jeonju is heavily involved in the cultural preservation of Hanok, especially because of its upkeep of the Hanok Village. However, recent substandard re-construction efforts have made it clear that there is a dire need for professional training and education in Hanok design and theory.  Since last year our university has responded by offering various programs related to Hanok and its study. Befitting to the title of “the most Korean global university,” CBNU has established a Hanok project promotions team and even founded a Hanok Studies department focused around the theory and practice of Hanok construction.  This year, CBNU established the Hanok Construction Technology Center and was selected by the Ministry of Land Transport and Maritime Affairs to begin training in Hanok design as part of the “Specialized Professional Development Program in Hanok Design.” Our university accomplished the splendid feat of being the only university selected for this task in the Jeolla-do region.  Currently, construction professionals who have surpassed a considerable admittance rate of 5 to 1 are receiving high-quality, specialized training in Hanok design and even hands-on education in Hanok construction from the likes of living cultural treasure, Gi Young Choi.  CBNU, also considered to have “the most Korean campus,” will aim to spur excitement by hosting a design competition for students with the mission of re-designing the CBNU main building in Hanok style. Starting next year, the Graduate School of Environmental Studies will inaugurate a Hanok Studies department, the first of its kind in the nation, to educate people in the art of Hanok. The department will offer a two-year curriculum in Hanok theory and practical training, and is currently open for admissions.  The development of Hanok professionals will also take place at our Gochang campus(formerly of Korea Polytechnic University), which was acquired from the Gochang district. Our university’s programs for development of Hanok professionals are expected to boost the “Han style” enterprise and have a positive impact in the Hallyu enterprise in the Jeollabuk-do region. Many are also hoping CBNU’s support of localized programs will ultimately promote local economic growth. Hye-Kyung Nam, Head of Campus Development Headquarters, said “Just like how our campus is always striving to be the most Korean campus, investing in Hanok related development programs is an inspiration to the region and our country. I hope the program will foster talented professionals that can maintain Jeollabuk-do’s reputation as the birthplace of Hanok. Moreover, I hope it will encourage other organizations and government institutions to support the cultural preservation of Hanok.  00한옥건출기술_종합센터_개소_1_1.jpgCount : 38350038 K

+ 제목Prof. Hee Joon Park, Invents Korea’s First Non-Flammable Wood 국제교류부 | 2011-12-22 | 조회 4803본문 내용 The number of fire accidents per year in Korea is more than 40,000 and these fires directly affect nearly 2,000 people. In 2006, there were roughly 30,000 fire accidents and that number increased to 47,000 the following year. Of these fire accidents, a quarter of them took place in residential premises or multi-purpose facilities, making them all the more life-threatening. An eco-friendly timber that does not burn may provide a solution to reducing the number of human casualties and injuries in fire accidents. Prof. Hee Joon Park of the CBNU Residential Environmental Science department has invented Korea’s first non-flammable wood, which is expected to be resourceful during this winter when fire accidents are common. Traditionally, wood can be treated to become non-flammable with a coat of flame-resistant varnish. This approach, however, has had drawbacks because it gets rid of the natural wood scent, obscures distinct wood grain patterns and textures, prevents temperature and humidity adjustment, and becomes unsuitable for proper disposal. Prof. Park, on the other hand, discovered a way to inject natural resins such as phosphate of ammonium into pieces of timber to create a truly non-combustible wood.   On the morning of December 8th, the effectiveness of this new invention was legitimized in a live experiment where an ordinary piece of wood was completely dissolved when lit on fire for 20 minutes while the newly invented timber did not burn at all aside from some soot. The new invention preserves the smell, texture, ability to adjust to temperature and humidity, natural colors and grains, without being susceptible to deformations, splits, contractions and expansions. This innovation is expected to have a big impact in the wood construction field. This type of material will have applications in wood-framed houses, construction of cultural monuments, Hanok houses and even furniture constructed from wood and interior materials that are especially vulnerable to fire accidents. Already having been patented and awarded ISO international certification (KS F ISO 5660-1, KS F 2271), this new type of timber is currently awaiting commercial implementations from abroad.  Prof. Park said, “The new invention is eco-friendly and will be used in wood-framed houses, cultural landmarks, wooden constructions and interior materials because it does not burn. I hope it will create a demand for applications of wood that were once considered illegal or unsuitable.”  00parkheejoon.jpgCount : 3785197 K

As one of the nation’s landmark universities, AUB was recognized in Spain as a Campus of International Excellence. Spurred by the success of the Erasmus program, which established an international network for academic exchange, the Ortelius program facilitates collaborative programs between Spain, Asia and Latin America. The objective is to increase international mobility among students, teaching and research staff, and administration and services staff. Students from universities that participate in the program can take advantage of the joint degrees and double degrees the program offers.  The trip to Barcelona was followed by a visit to the Czech Technical University in Prague. President Suh signed agreements on the invitation of distinguished graduate school students and student exchange programs that will begin in the 2012 school year. President Suh also took the opportunity to garner support for the “CBNU International Summer School” at all the universities visited during this trip. The participation of renowned professors and exceptional students is expected to increase the global makeup of our university. President Suh said, “The recent trip to Europe allowed us to open the door to international cooperation with European universities by establishing exchange agreements for students and faculty members. The double degree programs we have established offer a unique and pragmatic platform for academic exchange and brings our university closer to living up to the name of a ‘global campus.’” 00바르셀로나자치대학교(아나_리폴_아라실_총장_일행과).jpgCount : 39347591 K

+ 제목Catalan-Korea Dictionary Compilation Presented to the Catalonian Parliament in Spain 국제교류부 | 2012-01-24 | 조회 3333본문 내용 Spanish and Latin American Language department Professor Nak-won Choi presented a Catalan-Korean Dictionary personally compiled by Prof. Choi to the Catalonian Parliament, bridging an opportunity to increase awareness of Korea and to establish academic exchange between both countries. Catalan is the official language used in the Catalonia region in Spain and is one of the most prevalent languages of the 60 recognized minority languages in the European Union. While Catalan and Spanish(more specifically, Castilian) are used interchangeably in the Catalonia region, most of the names of locations and businesses are in Catalan, making the understanding of this language all the more important for travelers and visitors. In December of last year, Prof. Choi visited the Catalonia Parliament and presented the dictionary to Chairman Núria de Gispert with faculty members of the Autonomous University of Barcelona and students from the Korean Language Studies Department at the Barcelona Language School. This dictionary is the accumulation of five years’ worth of lexicographic compilation with the support of the CBNU International Joint Research Fund, the National Research Foundation of Korea and the Catalonian Government. The dictionary was compiled to increase the level of exchange with the Catalonia region, an area that plays a crucial in Korea-Spain relations. Ultimately, this it is expected to increase the amount of academic exchange between Korea and Spain. Prof. Choi said, “Korea is still not a very well-known country in Spain, but I think the compilation and presentation of this dictionary will spark the interest of the people in Catalonia, which is the epicenter of commerce in Spain. The Catalan people possess an exceptional amount of pride and attachment to the Catalan language, and I think they will be pleased to know that this dictionary is being published in Korea.” He continued, “Recently the spread of K-POP and Korean culture has instigated a boom in the interest to learn the Korean language in Spain, and I have no doubt this dictionary will be very useful. Moreover, I hope this dictionary will help increase the awareness of Korean culture throughout Spain.”  00전북대_최낙원_교수(맨_오른쪽)가_카탈루냐_주_의회에_사전을_증정하고_있다.jpgCount : 46299323 K

Recently the need for maintaining records has been more prevalent in corporations, hospitals, cultural institutions, religious institutions and other organizations beyond public administrations.  Moreover, the ICA(International Council on Archives) International Congress will take place in Korea in 2016. With the global spotlight on Korea from the archival studies community, it is particularly meaningful to recognize the importance of records managements throughout the country. The NAK selected one university each from the Seoul, Chungcheong, Honam and Yeongnam regions among universities with graduate departments in records management. In the Honam region, CBNU beat out seven other universities to earn the honor. As a result, our university will admit 30 students every year to the Records Management and Archives Institute, where they will receive a comprehensive education in records management. The list of courses includes basics and principles of records management, records evaluation, records preservation, and specialized areas of records management. Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to take the Professional Records Manager Certification Exam and once certified, they will be able to work at state administrations local government organizations, educations offices and other public administrations as an archivist or a private records manager.  Our university was selected as a location site for the Honam Records Management and Archives Institute in large part because, since 2003, our Information Science Graduate School has been developing consummate professional in records management who have gone to lead successful careers in public administrations, private sectors and research institutes.  Library and Information Science Professor Hye Young Kang said, “The founding of the Records Management and Archives Institute will be the catalyst that makes CBNU the leading institution in records management in Korea. + 제목President Godard from University of Paris Est Marné La Vallée awarded Honorary Doctorate 국제교류부 | 2012-05-09 | 조회 4159본문 내용 Chonbuk National University awarded an honorary doctorate degree in sociology to President Godard from University of Paris-Est Marné La Vallée(MLV) on April 26th. Nearly 100 attendees, which included CBNU President Geo-Suk Suh, administration staff from CBNU, and members of MLV, were at hand to congratulate President Godard on his honorary doctorate degree. Our university presented President Godard with the honorary doctorate degree because of his scholarly accomplishments in urban planning research and education, and for standing in the forefront of academic and cultural exchange between Korea and France. Since President Godard became President in 2007, MLV and CBNU have signed cooperation agreements and have been actively engaged in various forms of exchange such as student exchange and joint research programs. The close ties between the two universities have opened the door for CBNU students majoring in French Studies, Information Technology and Arts to become global leaders in their discipline through the student exchange programs. A few CBNU students even had the opportunity to showcase a film they had produced at the world-renowned Louvre Museum in 2009 and received a standing ovation from the audience. On the other hand, MLV Professor Claire Alby’s full-length documentary film, which was based on the diverse experiences MLV students had during their stay in Jeonju in 2010, was presented at this year’s 13th Jeonju International Film Festival through YouTube. It was a great opportunity to show the world CBNU’s academic excellence and Korea’s natural beauty. President Godard’s honorary doctorate awarding ceremony marks the beginning of CBNU’s plan to expand the level of exchange and collaboration with numerous universities and institutions throughout Europe. The dynamic cooperation is expected to have a profound impact in the spread of Korean culture throughout the world. During his acceptance speech, President Godard said, “It is an honor to receive this degree from Chonbuk National University, one of Korea’s most prominent universities with which our university maintains an active level of exchange and collaboration. I will take this as an opportunity to expand our spectrum of collaboration and help in any which way I can to propel Chonbuk National University as a globally prestigious university. President Suh echoed the sentiment. He said, “This degree is a tribute to a leader in French higher education who has helped globalize our university and spread Korean culture throughout the world. Now that you are a proud member of Chonbuk National University, I hope you can help our university go beyond national borders to become a truly globally renowned university.” President Godard received his doctorate degree in sociology from University of Paris VIII in 1973. While employed as a researcher at the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences and as a Professor at University of Nice, Godard’s study in urban development and urban sociology research has made a mark in the fields of sociology, economics, political science, and other social sciences. After moving to MLV in 2001, Godard was elected President in 2007. As a Knight of the National Order of Merit and Officer of the Order of the Academic Palms, Godard is truly a leading figure in French higher education. 00고다르총장명박수여식2.jpgCount : 40297117 K

+ 제목Film Produced by University of Paris Est Marne La Valleé Screened at the JIFF 국제교류부 | 2012-05-23 | 조회 3399본문 내용 Engaging in active exchange with overseas universities not only helps each university grow, it also causes a synergy effect by expanding the spectrum of exchange between two countries. CBNU’s collaboration with University of Paris Est Marne La Vallee(MLV), with which our university has associated since 2007, epitomizes this point of view. While the two universities has maintained a healthy level of exchange across various platforms, the exchange has been particularly active with students pursuing academic concentrations in visual arts production, allowing them to gain diverse experiences and perspectives while receiving instruction in visual arts theory and practice.  The close cooperation has allowed a full-length documentary produced by MLV professor Claire Alby and her students, who visited Jeonju in 2010, to receive its official debut screening at the Jeonju International Film Festival(JIFF) on May 2nd.  In 2009, a movie produced by CBNU students was showcased at the world-renowned Louvre Museum in Paris, France. The following year, Professor Claire Alby and her students visited CBNU to create a movie that was featured in this year’s JIFF; this is a prime example of yielding tangible results from multiple year’s worth of active academic exchange.  This 52-minute full-length film entitled “Jeonju, a Korean Town” captures the city of Jeonju from the perspective of Prof. Alby. The documentary depicts Jeonju as a dynamic city that tries to preserve Korean tradition while striving to become Asia’s equivalent of Hollywood. The content of the film is divided into three topics – the JIFF, the history of resistance against Japanese occupation, and the daily lives of women in Korea. The film ultimately conveys to the world the distinct beauty Jeonju possesses.  Additionally, on April 26th, MLV President Francis Godard was awarded an honorary doctorate degree by CBNU for his endeavors in spreading Korean culture and developing a collaborative relationship with CBNU. His contributions are expected to have a big impact in future exchange activity between Korea and France.  00전주,_어떤_한국도시_스틸_1.JPGCount : 39186806 K

It is clear that CBNU is one of the leading universities in technology licensing. As a result, CBNU received nearly 200 million won in financial support aimed at facilitating the discovery and commercialization of advanced technologies. Due to the rewarding endeavors of the program, CBNU plans to adopt policies that inject more resources into prototyping and technology licensing.  Our university recorded approximately 1 billion won in revenues last year generated from patents and proprietary technologies. In addition, the CBNU TLO program received praise for incrementing the revenue per patent by 158% in a 3-year span since 2008.  University-industry cooperation Director Nam-Pyo Cho said, “The reason why our university received high marks from the TLO Support Program was because of the effort we put in and results we generated. We aim to promote and market emerging technologies and expect that the profit accrued from our endeavors will have a big impact on the university.“ 00연구_및_실험_이미지.jpgCount : 42294397 K

+ 제목CBNU 1st Among National Universities in International Orientation 국제교류부 | 2012-07-15 | 조회 4499본문 내용 Chonbuk National University has placed atop all Korean national universities in the category of “international orientation.” In cooperation with Quacquarelli Symonds, Chosun Ilbo published university rankings in Asia and while the majority of national universities have remained stagnant or even fallen, CBNU’s rise in the category of international orientation has stood out from its peer universities.   The international orientation criteria gauges the amount of exchange students sent abroad and hosted by the university, as well as the percentage of international students and faculty members.  Even with the limitations imposed on national universities with regards to bringing in international scholars and professors, by emphasizing and prioritizing the globalization of our students and faculty, CBNU has been able to achieve an amazing feat. Every semester, our university has sent approximately 600 students to sister universities in New Zealand, the Philippines, China and various other countries through the nation’s largest Global Leader Project(GLP) program. In addition, CBNU has made exchange agreements with some of the most prestigious universities located in the United States and Europe to host and send students abroad. Expand the number of international students over 1,000 students are working towards a degree here at CBNU. Our international students have also proven to be the most distinguished students after focusing efforts on admitting the most capable students. An impressive 23.3 percent of our students have obtained Level 4 or higher in the national Korean language proficiency exam, TOPIK. This percentage ranks in the top 10 percentile among regional core universities.   To boost our international profile even more, CBNU inaugurated the International Summer School program during the summer break, offering students from around the world a wide variety of courses and the opportunity to experience Korean culture in the city of Jeonju.  President Geo-Suk Suh said, “Despite the numerous restrictions given to national universities relative to private universities, our efforts in expanding our international orientation have finally shown merit today. We will continue to recruit international professors and students, and cooperate with universities from abroad to maintain our reputation as the most Korean, globally prestigious university.   00국제화_지수_높은_우리대학.jpgCount : 46358859 K

+ 제목Inaugural International Summer School Begins 국제교류부 | 2012-07-25 | 조회 5634본문 내용 As Chonbuk National University settles down during summer break, students from around the world are gathering at our globalized campus.  Our university launched its inaugural session of International Summer School (ISS) with the opening ceremony on July 2nd, 03:00 PM, at the 2nd floor auditorium of the CBNU museum building.  The event was commemorated with a Korean dance and music performance, and followed by President Geo-Suk Suh giving a brief introduction of the courses, professors and students from each country.  More than 50 students from our sister universities in the United States, France, Spain, Japan and other countries have come to our university to receive language instruction in Korean and English, enroll in multi-disciplinary courses, interact with students from all over the world, and experience traditional Korean culture. Meanwhile, our university has also brought in some of the most distinguished students from the United States through the Critical Language Scholarship(CLS) Program, which is run by the United States Department of State. Since June 18th, these students have been receiving intensive Korean language training classes for this 8-week program,  ISS is a program that brings together local and international students from around the world during summer break with the purpose of cultivating global minds and introducing Korean culture while obtaining transferrable credits for courses.  Born as an offshoot of “Feeling Korea,” a Korean culture immersion program that was held during the summer and winter breaks, ISS differs from its predecessor in that it offers legitimate academic courses for international students rather than just a mere experiential program.  The ultimate goal and expected outcome of the program is to exert a positive influence on Chonbuk National University and the nation’s most Korean city, Jeonju.   Additionally, the program benefits our local students as they get to hone their proficiency in English, interact with a diverse group of intellectual students and cultivate their global mindset at the same time. President Suh said, “The International Summer School program allows local and international students to take a variety of courses together. This is truly the make-up of a global campus. We will continue to expand the courses offered and invite renowned professors from abroad to create one of Korea’s most exciting and successful summer programs.”  00국제하계대학입학식5.jpgCount : 40394743 K

+ 제목5th Place in Leiden Rankings Confirms CBNU’s Research Prowess 국제교류부 | 2012-10-12 | 조회 4117본문 내용 Our university’s research reputation has been reaffirmed as one of the nation’s best. Chonbuk National University placed 5th nationally and 1st among regional core universities in the Leiden Rankings, which gauges the scientific performance of universities worldwide.  The Leiden Rankings is a ranking system developed and published by Leiden University(Ranked 75th in the 2012 QS World University Rankings) from the Netherlands that measures the scientific impact of universities by comparing the top tenth percentile of the most cited university research papers in the world. This methodology adds a layer of objectivity and eliminates some of the inconsistencies found in ranking systems used for evaluating universities in Korea.  The Leiden Rankings and QS Rankings(40% of which is based on academic peer review) prioritize objectivity and address some of the disadvantages of current ranking systems that provide a subjective evaluation of Korean universities. Our standing in the Leiden Rankings therefore demonstrates the quality of research papers being published from our university.  According to the Leiden Rankings, 8.1% of CBNU’s research papers were in the top tenth percentile of the most cited research papers in the world. The four Korean universities that placed ahead of CBNU were POSTECH(14.1%), KAIST(11.4%), Seoul National University(8.9%), and Ewha Women’s University(8.4%).  CBNU confirmed its reputation as one of the most respected research universities in Korea by placing 1st among regional core universities and prevailing as the frontrunner by a large margin in this category, with other universities only managing to achieve 5 to 6 percent.  Meanwhile, influential newspaper publications have ranked CBNU 9th in the category of the “Top 1% Research Papers” and the Korea Research Foundation ranked our university 2nd among national universities in the same category. CBNU is repeatedly overcoming the limitations that come with being a regional university and ascertaining its status as a landmark university in Korea. Our university was able to publish high-quality research papers by implementing a faculty evaluation system that emphasizes the importance of quality rather than the quantity of papers. While other universities focused on increasing the number of published papers, CBNU started employing new policies and promotion incentive programs that compensated research professors for publishing research papers in the top tenth percentile of the most cited research papers.     In relation to the published rankings, President Suh said, “While it is true that universities in Korea have increased the quantity of research papers published worldwide, we still have room for improvement with regards to the quality of research papers. One world-class research paper can change the world and it is with this mindset that Chonbuk National University will continue to bolster its research programs and research competitiveness.   00Leiden_1.jpgCount : 38117125 K

+ 제목CBNU, 1st Place in Research Grants among National Universities for 2 Consecutive Years 국제교류부 | 2012-11-06 | 조회 3420본문 내용 Chonbuk National University, which boasts one of top research programs in the nation, accumulated the most research grants among national universities in the past year, standing as a testament to the university’s research competitiveness. According to an article published by the Ministry of Science, Education and Technology(MEST) and Korean Council for University Education(KCUE) on the Higher Education of Korea Information Services website, CBNU placed 1st in the categories of “total amount of research funds granted” and “research funds granted per faculty member.” This is the second consecutive year that our university has achieved this remarkable feat. With regards to the total amount of research funds granted, CBNU accumulated 124.4 billion won, 1st among national universities with the exception of Seoul National University. CBNU was able to garner 10 to 20 million won more in research funds than other regional core universities that have 200 more faculty members than our university.  Additionally, the average amount of research funds granted per faculty member for CBNU was revealed to be 121.5 million won, 1st among regional core national universities. The only national universities that were awarded more than 100 million won in research grants were Mokpo National University and Chonbuk National University.   The total amount of research funds granted and the research funds granted per faculty member are among the highest in the country. This is highly attributable to the university’s thriving research environment. CBNU accumulated 35.9 million won in 2007, 43.6 million won in 2008, 98.8 million won in 2009, 117.5 million won in 2010, 124.4 million won in 2011. The amount of research funds granted has increased threefold in the last 5 years. Our university placed 5th nationally in the Leiden Rankings, which measures the scientific impact of universities worldwide by comparing the top tenth percentile of the most cited research papers in the world, and 9th nationally in the “number of top 1% research papers,” living up to the name of one of the most competitive research universities in Korea.  One of the primary reasons behind the university’s recent accolades in research lies within the newly implemented promotion system, which doubles incentives for publications and research achievements and provides systematic support for research work.  Since 2007, CBNU has been organizing diverse programs that promote academic research and implementing professor evaluation systems that ensure a standard of high-quality research.  In relation to this accomplishment, President Geo-Suk Suh said, “Since research competitiveness is the driving force behind a university’s development and progress, it is equally important to establish an active support system that allows faculty members to be successful in their research endeavors. We will continue to give our utmost effort to conduct research that changes the world.” 00공동실험실습관.jpgCount : 40312731 K

+ 제목Professor Chang-Hee Hong regulates LED heat with ‘Graphene” for the world’s first 국제교류부 | 2013-02-21 | 조회 6405본문 내용The technology for solving the heating problem of LED element was developed by our university’s teaching staff for the world’s first.  Prof. Chang-Hee Hong’s team of Department of Semiconductor technology revealed that the heating problem of LED element was fixed significantly by using ‘Graphene’, known as a dream material. The search, supported by National Research Foundation of Korea, was published in the latest issue of Nature Communications with a title of ‘Improved heat dissipation in gallium nitride light-emitting diodes with embedded graphene oxide pattern.’ The sapphire element ,which has been mainly used for a LED board previously, has low heat conductivity which caused malfunction of a semiconductor due to lack of heat release when operates in high-power. This has been troubled the team with their reliability. Professor Hong’s team, however, put a thin GaN layer containing graphene on a sapphire board by using ‘Graphene Patterning Process’, and succeeded in manufacturing a LED element.   A graphene has higher heat conductivity than a copper at more than ten times. Thus it could lower temperature of a semiconductor significantly by releasing and distributing heat evenly.   This technology allows a high current drive system and, therefore a high-powered LED can be realized in a horizontal LED, which generates large amount of heat.    Graphene Patterning Process, developed solely by Professor Hong’s team, can be immediately mass-produced because it is not limited to any size or form.  It also allows an easy-production via a high heat treatment, and thus it is expected to be commercialized soon. This technology is already patented in Korea, and is being processed to be internationally patented in countries like America.  Professor Hong says, “This research has a significance for its use of Graphene for the world’s first. I will do my best to commercialize this technology soon.” For your information, the world’s first division of Graphene gave Prof. Andre Geim and Doctor Konstantin Novoselov of University of Manchester, UK the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2010. Graphene has received wide attention from the world’s academia for its trait, such as 0.7 nanometer thickness,  100X stronger than a steel, 100X higher electric conductivity than a copper, and 100X faster electron transporting speed than semiconductor silicone.   00홍창희교수님.jpgCount : 41209356 K
