    "text": "So, artificial intelligence (AI) tells an Illinois woman to fire her human lawyer, and now there's a multi-million dollar lawsuit over it.\n\nIf you’ve been wondering what the legal system will look like in the age of artificial intelligence, I'm guessing this lawsuit might be offering us all an early preview.\n\nA case filed in federal court in Chicago is drawing national attention after an Illinois woman allegedly relied on an AI chatbot for legal advice that ultimately convinced her to fire her real attorney and try to reopen a closed legal case. The situation has now sparked a lawsuit that could become one of the first major legal battles over how AI tools are used in the courtroom.\n\nAccording to court filings, the woman from Des Plaines had previously settled a disability dispute with her employer’s insurance provider,Nippon Life Insurance Company of America. The case dated back to injuries she suffered at work, including carpal tunnel syndrome and tennis elbow. After the case was settled in 2024, the agreement includeda clause that barred future claims related to the dispute.\n\nBut when the Illinois woman decided later that she wanted to reopen the case, her human attorney reportedly told her it couldn’t be done. That’s when she turned to an AI chatbot for advice.\n\nAccording to the lawsuit, the chatbot suggested her lawyer might be “gaslighting” her and encouraged her to challenge the settlement anyway. The AI then allegedly helped generate legal motions and arguments that the woman filed in court herself after dismissing her attorney.\n\nSome of the legal citations and case law the AI reportedly provided didn’t actually exist. Court documents say the woman ultimately filed dozens of legal motions and other documents, many allegedly drafted by the chatbot, including references to completely fabricated cases. One example cited in the lawsuit was a case called “Carr v. Gateway, Inc.,” which investigators say isn't even a real case.\n\nNippon Life Insurance Company of America claims the wave of filings forced it to spend roughly $300,000 responding in court, and it is now seeking that amount in damages plus $10 million in punitive penalties from the AI developer behind the chatbot.\n\nLegal experts say the case could become an early test of how responsibility is assigned when people rely on AI for professional advice. The lawsuit even argues the chatbot effectively acted as an unlicensed attorney, which is an accusation that could have major implications if courts take it seriously.\n\nWhether the claims succeed or not, this probably won’t be the last case like this. My brother played hockey...from age five through senior year.\n\nI spent many weekends with my family at ice rinks all over Illinois, Wisconsin, and beyond watching my brother play hockey for the Rockford Hockey Club, and when he started high school he played for the Rockford Icemen.\n\nMy family's days of spending every weekend at the ice rink may be over, but the memory of Rockford Icemen games lives on, and soon theRockford IceHogswill be honoring it in a big way:\n\nMy brother is not featured in any of the Icemen photos above, but several of my old classmates and friends are. This special IceHogs jersey auction will benefit so many young kids with big hockey dreams in the Rockford area. Please grab game ticketshere.\n\nThe Rockford Icemen were a powerhouse in Illinois high school hockey from 1998-2016, but faced many challenges in the team's final years...basically because they were too good.\n\nThe Icemen were a combined high school team, primarily because no Rockford area high school had enough players to form one school team. As the Icemen championship titles continued to stack up, the league rules started changing.\n\nLongtime Icemen Head Coach Tim Mattila toldWTVOin 2016:\n\nWhen I started in ’91 we had eight schools. As we started to win and become successful they started taking schools away from us. That’s just a fact.\n\nHaving only a few schools that they were allowed to draw players from, Icemen player numbers dwindled, until the team officially ended in 2018.\n\nOver the next several years, high school hockey players had to look for other teams outside of Rockford to play for. ln 2024, the Belvidere Fury and the Rockford Hockey Club teamed up to form the Rockford Area High School Hockey Program, and theRockford Lightningwere born.\n\nThe initiative was approved by the Amateur Hockey Association of Illinois earlier this week and aims to ensure that all players who start their hockey journey in Rockford can continue to play together under a single banner, regardless of school affiliation.
