fed with damp sticks and old stories,
smoke curling like prayers no one wrote down.

turns her keening to a lullaby.
It laughs back at the pooka
when he tries to scare the horses.

Children warm their hands by it,
learning the shape of chin down, heart up
before they learn their letters.

Mothers rock babies to its crackle,
whispering names the big world tried to forget.

each hammer strike a quiet promise:
we are still here.

When the guards come,
when the signs say "No Travellers,"
