The most important reasons for citing are: To honor the rights of the author of the original work. This is referred to as copyright. To give credit to the author of the original work. To enable a faculty member or researcher to locate and check the original sources you have used. To help readers who are interested to know more about your subject. To facilitate the research process and enable others to follow up on your work.
--- Components of a citation ---
A citation is made of parts , each part indicating specific information about the source (author, title, page no., etc. - depending on the resource). This bibliographic information together makes up a complete full citation. A full citation will give the reader a clue as to the type of resource being described (chapter in a book, electronic journal article, thesis, etc.) A reference list or list of cited works at the end of a paper is sometimes called a 'Bibliography' because it provides bibliographic information.
• For a journal article in print
--- How to cite ---
Most students work on assignments in chunks, meaning at different times and places. It is therefore helpful to write or save as many details of your sources as possible (author, title, chapter, page no., URL, etc.) every time you use one so you may refer back to it. If you are getting information from databases such as Academic Search Complete through EBSCO, you should open an account and save your sources in folders. This is very helpful when you need to add/remove sources and compile your bibliography or reference list. There are 2 steps when citing: 1. In-text citation This means referring to the original source and adding a number in brackets within the assignment. A number enclosed in square brackets, eg. [1], placed in the text, indicates the relevant reference. It should appear on the same line as the text, before any punctuation, with a space before the bracket. Citations are numbered in the order in which they appear in the assignment. Each citation corresponds to a numbered reference containing full bibliographic details about the source, which is cited in the reference/bibliography list at the end of the assignment. Once a source has been cited, the same number is used in all subsequent references. Some examples: "...end of the line for my research [13]." "The theory was first put forward in 1987 [1]." "Several recent studies [3, 4, 15, 16] have suggested that..." "For an example, see [7]." 2. Reference List or Cited Works or Bibliography This refers to the full bibliographic details of the sources you've used to write your assignment. It is called a reference list. A numbered list of references must be provided at the end of the assignment. The list should be arranged in the order of the citation number used in the text of the assignment. Put the number of the reference in square brackets. Eg: [1] List only one reference per reference number, even if you refer to the source many times. Footnotes or other information that is not part of the referencing fo...
--- Reference guidelines ---
1. Reference numbers & layout of list Each reference number should be enclosed in square brackets [1] and should run in a numeric order as appearing in the text. The reference list or bibliography should appear at the end of the paper. The heading of the section should not be numbered as other sections of your paper are. The second & subsequent lines in the citation are indented. 2. Authors or 'statement of responsibility' Authors' names should be listed in natural order (first initials followed by last or family name). Example: A. M. Al Mazrouie NOT Al Mazrouie, A. M. If there are four or more authors, the reference may list either all authors, or only the first author followed by et al . Example: M. Al Mualla, A. Husseini, F. L. Mumtaz, R. Al Ali. OR M. Al Mualla et al . If no author is given for a work, the reference may begin with the name of the editor or sponsoring body. (EXAMPLE: J. Wilson and L. Balanis, eds., Two Approaches to ...) The sponsoring body may be listed as the author even if it is listed again as the publisher. If there is no known author, publisher or sponsoring body, the reference should begin with the title of the work. If both an author and an editor or translator are listed, the editor's or translator's name, preceded by "ed." (edited by) or "trans." (translated by), should follow the title of the work, separated by a comma. EXAMPLE: F. R. Amdur, Simulated Biological Materials , ed. J. Lauber and J. L. Bertrand, ... Whenever a publisher is listed, the location of the publisher and the date of publication should be included. 3. Titles Article titles and names of reports, chapters or unpublished papers and dissertations should be enclosed in quotation marks. Commas should go inside the final quotation mark. Titles of journals, books, conference proceedings, and published dissertations should be italicized . Names of IEEE publications should be abbreviated as shown in the "List of IEEE Transactions, Journals, and Letters" and the "List of IEEE...

"Buyer's Guides" are specialized directories for industry. Although some do include the suppliers catalogs, most are actually indexes for finding vendors. Print trade magazines often included annual special issues of buyer's guides; with the advent of the web, most of these have become features on web sites. Although a keyword search in any web search engine will often find something of use, why buyer's guides remain popular is the categorization features and the in-depth expertise behind them. "Abstract services" help you find information systematically by indexing the published documents in specific disciplines. They use consistant indexing practices, are continuously updated, and are compiled by experts. No one service covers all aspects of any discipline; often, using two or three services produces the best results. Some, like the Applied Science & Technology Abstracts , are meant as quick introductions to a topic. Others, like SciFinder Scholar , attempt to find all relevant material. Each of these services has its own interface. Although their Help functions are usually good, it's useful to know what to expect. See the Options tab in Basic Search Techniques .
