| GUIDE: Finding books at your library | |
| URL: https://library.ku.ac.ae/findingbooks | |
| DESCRIPTION: This guide is to explain what call numbers are and how to read call numbers to be able to find books and other materials at your library easily. | |
| --- LC Classification Numbers --- | |
| A Call number is like an address: it tells us where the book is located in the library. Call numbers appear. Note that the same c all numbers can be written from top-to-bottom, or left-to-right. KU libraries uses Library of Congress Classification for all non-fiction Call numbers to arrange it's collection on shelves. This system uses a combination of letters and numbers to arrange materials by subjects. The library of congress classification system is arranged as follows: You can check the details here | |
| If you need additional help feel free to contact our Library staff at: 02-312-4604 Main Campus Library Email: muna.abdulla@ku.ac.ae | |
| --- How to read a call number --- | |
| A call number is the address of the library item book, journal, DVD....etc. The first line of the Call Number begins with one, two, or three letters, these letters should be read alphabetically, these letters represents the subject of the item according to LC classification system. The numbers following the first line letters are read as whole numbers. These numbers may have one or more digits. A123 will be shelved before A1234. If there are additional numbers after the whole number, these numbers should be treated as decimal AB1234.1 will be between AB1234 and AB1235. The third part of the call number is a combination of letters and numbers. The numbers are also decimal. The letters are shelved alphabetically and the numbers following are treated as if they were preceded by a decimal. The numbers in this line of call numbers are read as a decimal number. 0.31 is before 0.68 0.68 is before 0.7 all of the above numbers before 0.754. The last part in call numbers may include volume numbers. copy numbers, dates of publication,...etc. and other supplement or index specifiers. Examples: V.1 V.2, Vol.1 Vol.2, C1 C2. The last part of the call number might include not always the location of the item such as HAB which means this items is located in Habshan library or ARZ which means its located in Arzanah library. | |

To suggest materials for permanent additions to the library collection, please fill out the online form on the library webpage, email the book's information to acquisitions, or use the Library web catalog. To expedite the identification and acquisition process, please include as many details as possible, such as author, title, publisher, publication date, and ISBN. Check the library's online catalog to see if the book is already in the library collection. The library's digital-first policy prioritizes the purchase of ebooks with unlimited user access whenever possible to maximize resource accessibility. Keep in mind that print books may take time to fulfill, so please submit requests for new programs, specific needs, or class references early. Reference materials for future and new courses are preferred to be submitted ahead of time. The library generally does not acquire textbooks or multiple copies of titles. However, for textbook requests or queries, please email abdulrafi.jaffarullah@ku.ac.ae . Expensive items, or items in languages other than Arabic and English, as well as specific needs for titles or formats, require justifications. Upon availability, an automated notification email with access/item details will be sent. For any inquiries related to requested books, please reach us at acquisitions@ku.ac.ae . | |
| The Faculty Liaisons Program designates department representatives to oversee book acquisitions in their respective colleges. These individuals are responsible for recommending books that can enrich the library's collection and support the academic and research requirements of their departments. To streamline this process, the library welcomes book recommendations from faculty liaisons, who can provide insights into their department's subject areas, research focuses, and new initiatives. Recommendations can be submitted via email , an online form , the library catalogue , or the weekly GOBI new titles notifications , which are delivered via email. GOBI (Global Online Bibliographic Information) is an academic book vendor that delivers tailored lists of recently published books across various disciplines and interest areas, primarily categorized according to the Library of Congress call number ranges. Notification alerts pertaining to these lists are forwarded to faculty liaisons through GOBI. Should you be a faculty member interested in evaluating and selecting new titles in your field, kindly contact the Acquisitions department to establish your profile in GOBI. To utilize GOBI Notifications as a selection tool, please adhere to the following steps: 1.Monitor incoming emails with the subject line " GOBI Notification: 2024 [subject] Books - ## items for period ##/##/2024 - ##/##/2024 acquisitions@ku.ac.ae" . From "DoNotReply@Ybp.com " so make sure it is whitelisted. 2.Access the provided link in the email to view a list of titles within your discipline. Indicate your selection by clicking on the "' white vertical bar " located on the left of the bibliographic record until it turns dark blue. | Hey there! If you're thinking about donating materials to the KU Library, we'd love to provide some guidelines. We carefully consider all donations at the library, but please note that donated books are not guaranteed to be housed, retained, or displayed. Our selection and weeding principles apply to gifts in the same way as they apply to purchases. We're looking for new or gently used hardcovers and quality paperback books that are in good condition. However, we can't accept magazines or newspapers, Reader's Digest or condensed books, mass-market paperbacks, advertisements, flyers, pamphlets, postcards, or promotional material. Also, older textbooks, materials with highlighting or handwriting, or damaged materials won't make the cut. We steer clear of titles associated with censorship and, unfortunately, cannot accept books from individuals outside of our KU. If you're planning to make a large donation, please provide a list of the items. This is particularly important for bulk donations (more than a box). You can email the list or description of the items to acquisitions@ku.ac.ae . Once the items are approved, you can coordinate with Acquisitions to drop them off at the library during regular working hours. Keep in mind that unselected books won't be returned. Feel free to use the QR code to share all the information about your book donation easily. We appreciate your generosity and support! | |
| Please share your suggestions or comments here on how we can improve this page to better meet your needs. | |

| --- Preparing for your GRE test --- | |
| General tips: First thing you need to do is set your score goal according to the graduate program you're going to apply to. Setting a score goal will help you measure when you practice how close you are in reaching your goal. Set your score goal and create a study timeline. Visit the GRE official website, to read about the test and get familiar with the test requirements. Download from the GRE website the official practice test called powerprep 2, it's a software which contains two GRE practice tests very similar to the real test. How to plan your study timeline: Different students needs different timeline plans depending on their skill level. Create a calendar or use a planner to assign and schedule tasks you need to do weekly. For example, week one practice writing essays of each type, practice verbal questions, and practice math questions. Assign one or two days to review your answers to see how you are progressing. Your schedule should include at least six practice tests of each subject. If you feel that your schedule is not good enough to full fill your study and progress needs or plan, change it and create a new one. If you are practicing the math questions, make sure that you fully understand the concept of the test, is it testing exponents or fractions, then try to have a technique especially when practicing verbal questions. During your first week practice program, don't time yourself, focus on understanding the technique and concept of the questions. The second week try to calculate your timing and compare to the actual test timing, and gradually improve. When practicing the test, if your answer was not correct or you did not understand the question, try to understand and figure why and what did you do wrong to determine what you need to work on or improve more to get the required results and score. | |
