1. WHAT IS OPEN ACCESS?
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Open Access (OA) publishing means published work can be accessed
by readers without a subscription or institutional access.
Because readers do not pay, publishers generate revenue by charging
the author an Article Processing Charge (APC).

KU supports three OA models:

GOLD OA:
- Journal is completely Open Access
- Publisher charges an APC to the author/institution
- All articles in the journal are freely available

HYBRID:
- Journal has a mix of OA and closed-access articles
- OA articles have an APC; traditional articles do not
- Author chooses at submission whether to go OA

GREEN OA:
- Author/institution publishes a copy in an institutional repository
- The repository copy is freely accessible even if the journal version is not
- KU's institutional repository is Khazna (khazna.ku.ac.ae)

Important: OA does not change the peer-review process. Articles must
still be accepted and pass peer review before publication.

3. KU OA FUNDING OPTIONS — THREE TIERS
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

TIER 1 — TOP 15% JOURNALS (Library pays APC only):
  Conditions (ALL three must be met):
  - At least one author's PRIMARY affiliation on the paper must be KU
  - Paper must be in a journal from one of KU's 6 partner publishers:
    ACS, Elsevier, IEEE, Springer Nature, Taylor & Francis, Wiley
  - Journal must be rated in the TOP 15% by Scopus

TIER 2 — TOP 10% JOURNALS (APC + EPC via Provost office):
  Conditions:
  - Paper accepted in journal rated TOP 10% by Scopus
  - KU must be author's primary affiliation
  - Must have received email from library confirming they don't
    cover these charges (i.e. not in Tier 1 agreement)
  
  How to apply:
  - Submit Payment Request (PMR) through KU Portal:

  - Attach: Invoice + Final accepted manuscript + Library rejection email
  
  Important notes:
  - This is NOT a guarantee of approval — Provost office reviews each case
  - Payments completed by finance team (their SLAs not in Provost control)
  - Direct PMR only — expense reimbursement is NOT allowed

TIER 3 — Q1 JOURNALS (Department budget):
  Conditions:
  - Neither Tier 1 nor Tier 2 applies
  - Paper published in a Q1 journal (Scopus-determined)
  
  How to apply:
  - Contact your department head to inquire about department budget support
  - Direct PMR only — expense reimbursement is NOT allowed

4. HOW KU DETERMINES JOURNAL RATINGS (TOP 15%)

KU uses Scopus to determine journal ratings.

- From 24 October 2023: journals must be in top 20% by Scopus
- From 1 January 2024 onwards: journals must be in top 15% by Scopus

1. Author submits article via Wiley Author Center
2. When asked who pays APC, select:
   "My institution or funder has an agreement with Wiley and may pay"
3. Select Khalifa University using the institutional lookup tool
4. APC administrators notified — approved IF journal is top 15% (Scopus)
5. Paper goes through editing and peer review
6. If accepted, author acknowledges licence agreement
7. Paper published

2. Click "Rights and Access" form link
3. Corresponding author selects KU as affiliation
4. Add co-authors and their affiliations
5. Optionally add funder details
6. Choose Gold Open Access or Subscription
7. If OA chosen, select CC licence
8. Accept agreement and submit
9. KU administrators notified directly to pay the APC

── SPRINGER NATURE ────────────────────────────────
Agreement: Active from agreement date. Covers HYBRID journals only.
IMPORTANT EXCLUSIONS:
- Agreement covers hybrid journals ONLY — NOT pure Gold OA journals
- Scientific Reports is specifically EXCLUDED from the agreement
  (KU cannot pay APCs for Scientific Reports)
- Corresponding author MUST be affiliated with KU

1. After editorial acceptance, corresponding author receives form

7. If journal meets KU guidelines → APC approved and paid
8. If journal does NOT meet guidelines → request rejected,
   authors must arrange alternative payment

── TAYLOR & FRANCIS ───────────────────────────────
Agreement: Active from 1 January 2023.
Corresponding author MUST be affiliated with KU and use KU email
address — this allows publisher to automatically request APC from KU.
If corresponding author not affiliated with KU, KU cannot pay.

ResearchBee has THREE tools available as tabs on the main page:

TOOL 1 — JOURNAL SUBMISSION TAB:
  Two modes:
  a) Browse by Subject: Type a discipline → get top 15 ranked journals
     instantly from 53,000+ indexed titles. No manuscript needed.
  b) Analyse Manuscript: Paste abstract → AI matches journals with full
     Green OA policy breakdown, submission strategy, cover letter generation.
  Use this for: finding where to publish, journal rankings, OA compliance.

TOOL 2 — LICENSE CHECKING TAB:
  Look up self-archiving rights for a specific known journal.
  Gives: version-specific permissions (preprint/AAM/VoR), embargo periods,
  licence conditions, repository restrictions.
  Use this for: "Can I deposit my accepted manuscript in Khazna?"
  or "What's the embargo on this journal?"

TOOL 3 — DATA REPOSITORY TAB:
  Describe a dataset → get matched repositories (domain-specific +
  generalist like Zenodo, Dryad) + Khazna.
  Gives: FAIR alignment, licence support, embargo support, cost, DOI provision.
  Use this for: "Where should I deposit my research data?"
