　　Studies show that we often like villains when they’re similar to us.  We are drawn to the qualities we share, like being smart or strong.  This doesn’t make us evil, but we still have a dark side.  Through villains, we can learn about it.
　　One study found an interesting difference between fictional and real villains.  If we meet real people like us, but with bad qualities, we dislike them.  We don’t want to believe we’re bad people like they are.  But because fictional villains aren’t real, we feel safer seeing ourselves in them.
　　Another reason people sometimes like villains is because they’re complicated.  Hero characters are often totally good and don’t make big mistakes.  Villains have stories that show they’re not perfect.  Since we also make mistakes, we can understand them.
　　There are some villains who are so interesting that they have their own stories.  Think about movies with villains as main characters.  There’s Maleficent, about the evil fairy from Sleeping Beauty.  The Joker got his own movie in 2020.  And some people think Darth Vader from Star Wars is cooler than Luke Skywalker.  Although we would never do what these villains do, they still attract us.  They let us explore our complicated selves in a safe way.
