Murakami throws a lot of seemingly random pieces of information out there, sorta like floating puzzle pieces, and keeps you continuously wondering how they will all float into place together, slowly. So slow that it's easy to feel like the story is happening to you, right now.
Murakami throws a lot of seemingly random pieces of information out there, sorta like floating puzzle pieces, and keeps you continuously wondering how they will all float into place together, slowly. So slow that it's easy to feel like the story is happening to you, right now. There is something really brilliant about the pace of his writing. Not a lot happens, but everything happens, everything he wanted to happen happened in your mind.
I can imagine that movie producers / writers are having a fuck of a time trying to figure out how they could turn his novels into movies... movies just can't convey this very easily in my opinion.
I feel like he also taps into some super deep male insecurities. I could go into that forever but the way he develops Kumiko in The Wind Up Bird Chronicle is an example. Just how jealous he makes you feel, it's like you want to rip the book open and pull Kumiko out, and yell at her and kiss her at the same time. In the end, his work almost makes me feel silly, like I was a girl reading some gossip magazines... and totally loving it.
