About Genomics Aotearoa

Genomics Aotearoa is Aotearoa New Zealand’s collaborative platform for genomics and bioinformatics—supporting nationally significant research and building capability so that genomics can translate into real-world outcomes.

Our work programme spans three genomics research themes—Health, Primary Production, and Environment—supported by technical infrastructure in Bioinformatics and cultural infrastructure grounded in Te Ao Māori and Vision Mātauranga.

Genomics Aotearoa is hosted by Te Whare Wānanga o Ōtākou | University of Otago and funded as a national infrastructure platform through New Zealand’s Strategic Science Investment Fund (SSIF).

Data governance and responsible use

Genomics data can be sensitive—culturally, ethically, and legally. We ask all users to engage with our resources in ways that uphold responsible practice in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Please:

  • Follow the principles and guidance in Guidelines for Māori genomic research (including Te Nohonga Kaitiaki, Te Mata Ira, He Tangata Kei Tua, and Te Ara Tika).
  • For taonga species genomic data, use the Aotearoa Genomic Data Repository (AGDR) for storage/sharing and managed access pathways.
  • Respect consent, privacy, and governance for any human or community-linked data. Do not attempt re-identification of individuals.
  • If you’re unsure whether a dataset/model is appropriate to use or redistribute, contact us: genomics.aotearoa@otago.ac.nz

Kia ora for supporting responsible genomics and bioinformatics in Aotearoa.
