Refusal-Classifier
Fine-tuned from answerdotai/ModernBERT-base to classify LLM refusals. Give it a prompt and a response; it picks one of 5 labels:
| Class / Label | Description |
|---|---|
| "compliant" | The assistant fully comlies with user's request without any refusal or policy warnings. |
| "full_refusal" | The assistant completely refuses due to safety, ethical, moral, legal/illegal or policy guidelines (e.g. "I cannot assist with that", "I'm sorry, but I cannot fulfill this request") etc. |
| "partial_refusal" | The assistant refuses the harmful/unsafe part of the prompt but complies with the safe/educational part (e.g. "I cannot write a phishing email, but I can explain how phishing works and how to defend against it.") etc. |
| "capability_limitation" | The assistant cannot fulfill the request due to technical limitations, lack of tools, or knowledge cutoff, NOT due to safety policies (e.g. "I cannot browse the live internet", "I don't have access to real-time stock prices", "I cannot generate images", "I don't have access to function calling or tool calls, or I was not trained on function calling") etc. |
| "clarification" | The assistant neither answers nor refuses, but instead asks the user for more information to clarify the prompt. (e.g. "Could you specify which programming language you are using?") etc. |
Model selection
Checkpoint chosen by the highest validation macro F1: 0.9416 at step 300.
Evaluation
Scored once on the test split (445 rows), with the published checkpoint.
| Metric | Score |
|---|---|
| Accuracy | 0.9371 |
| Macro F1 | 0.9382 |

| Label | Precision | Recall | F1 | Test rows |

| weighted avg | 0.9387 | 0.9371 | 0.9375 | 445 |
- Precision: of the rows predicted this label, how many were right.
- Recall: of the rows that really are this label, how many were found.
- Test rows: how many test rows carry this label.

Training
Trained on the train split of the dataset. Checkpoint selection used the validation split and the best macro F1 metric. Final checkpoint was tested on the test split as per the Evaluation.
Limitations
The model was trained on English refusals dataset only. Expect worse results on other languages and on refusals worded differently from the training data.
The training data covered almost all patterns and variations of refusals which all modern LLMs in general use (2022-present), including many "edge-cases" and "false-positives", so the second case is very unlikely to happen.
