elephant-1
elephant-1 is a 9B parameter decision model post-trained from Qwen3.5-9B by Base Labs at Baseten. Provide the model a state and a set of questions and it will return a calibrated probability for every option, answering all questions from one shared-prefix prefill. On tested benchmarks:
- Best model under 15B on the Jev Decision Index 0.4: 62.65, tied #8 of 208 models.
- 65.2 on a replica of the Artificial Analysis Decision Index: level with d1-ultra (65).
For tasks that need broader general knowledge, see the 27B sibling mammoth-1.
๐๏ธ Model Details
| Model | Parameters | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Qwen3.5-9B | 9B | General-purpose base model |
| elephant-1 | 9B | Post-trained for single-pass, calibrated decisions |
| mammoth-1 | 27B | Larger sibling, highest accuracy |
- Training: full fine-tune, text only (we freeze the vision encoder)
- Attention: block-bidirectional mask on full-attention layers.
- Max sequence length: 16,384 tokens
๐ How to use
Baseten Model APIs
elephant-1 is free for one week on Baseten Model APIs, with zero data retention on by default. The free week ends 10/27/26 at 11:59 PM PT.
Self-hosted
setup.sh installs the pinned serving runtime (OneJev + serve.patch). It needs one CUDA GPU and the pytorch/pytorch:2.8.0-cuda12.8-cudnn9-devel image.
hf download baselabs/elephant-1 --local-dir elephant-1 && bash elephant-1/setup.sh
