π°πͺ Inuka AI Foundation
Building useful AI for Africa. Advancing research. Empowering people.
Inuka AI Foundation is a Kenya-based AI research and development initiative focused on building practical artificial intelligence systems, exploring machine learning and language models, and making AI more accessible to African communities.
We believe Africa should not only use AI built elsewhere, but also contribute to the research, development, evaluation, and deployment of AI systems that address our own challenges.
Our work brings together AI research, model development, real-world applications, and community education. We are starting with practical projects, learning through experimentation, and building toward a future where African researchers and developers can contribute meaningfully to the global AI ecosystem.
π Our Mission
To advance accessible, responsible, and locally relevant AI through research, open collaboration, model development, and useful applications that address real-world challenges across Africa.
π Our Vision
An African AI ecosystem where local talent can research, build, evaluate, and deploy AI technologies that improve lives, strengthen communities, and contribute to global scientific progress.
π What We Do
π§ 1. AI Research and Model Development
We explore machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, computer vision, and large language models.
Our work includes:
- Experimenting with and fine-tuning existing open-weight models.
- Developing task-specific AI models and prototypes.
- Evaluating model performance, limitations, and practical usefulness.
- Exploring datasets and training approaches for African contexts.
- Learning and researching the techniques needed to develop increasingly capable AI systems.
We distinguish between research prototypes, fine-tuned models, and production-ready systems. We aim to document our methods and communicate our results honestly.
π± 2. AI Applications for African Challenges
We build applications that bring AI capabilities closer to the people who can benefit from them.
Our flagship application is ShambaDoctor KE, an AI-powered agricultural assistant designed to help farmers explore crop, soil, and livestock concerns and access agricultural guidance.
We are interested in practical AI for agriculture, education, language technology, healthcare research, and other areas where locally relevant solutions can make a difference.
π 3. AI Education and Community
We support AI learning by exploring machine learning concepts, experimenting with models, and sharing practical knowledge with aspiring developers and researchers.
We want more African students, educators, and developers to gain the skills and confidence to build AI systemsβnot simply consume them.
π€ 4. Datasets, Research and Collaboration
We welcome conversations with researchers, developers, universities, agricultural organisations, community groups, and responsible technology partners.
Potential areas of collaboration include:
- Dataset contribution and responsible data collection.
- Model development and fine-tuning.
- Model evaluation and benchmarking.
- AI application pilots and user feedback.
- Technical mentorship, research partnerships, and funding opportunities.
Any data contribution or research collaboration must respect consent, privacy, applicable licences, and relevant legal and ethical requirements.
πΎ Featured Project: ShambaDoctor KE
AI Farm Assistant in Every Pocket
Slogan: Piga picha. Tujue tatizo. Okoa mavuno.
ShambaDoctor KE is an AI-powered agricultural assistance platform built to make agricultural information and AI-assisted guidance more accessible to Kenyan farmers.
Agriculture is central to livelihoods across Kenya and much of Africa. Yet accessing timely, understandable guidance about crop problems, soil health, livestock concerns, and next steps can be difficult.
ShambaDoctor KE explores how AI can help bridge that gap.
What it offers
- Crop Doctor: AI-assisted exploration of crop health concerns.
- Soil Doctor: Support for exploring soil-related questions.
- Livestock Doctor: AI-assisted livestock information and guidance.
- AI Chat: A conversational interface for agricultural questions.
- Agrovets: A directory-style feature intended to help users discover agricultural suppliers.
Our goal
We want to put ShambaDoctor KE in the hands of real farmers, gather feedback from agricultural experts, improve the experience, and evaluate its usefulness in practical settings.
The platform is an evolving project. AI-generated suggestions are not a substitute for qualified agricultural advice, laboratory testing, or veterinary care where those are needed. Its recommendations should be evaluated before being relied on for important farming decisions.

We welcome feedback from farmers, agricultural extension officers, agronomists, veterinarians, researchers, and organisations interested in agricultural innovation.
π€ Language Models: InukaLM
InukaLM represents our exploration of large language models and model adaptation.
Our work includes experimenting with open-weight language models, parameter-efficient fine-tuning techniques such as LoRA, and building prototypes that explore how adapted models can support learning and other useful tasks.
One of our model projects is:
- InukaLM β LLM Tutor: Explore the model on Hugging Face
This work is part of our learning and research into model adaptation. Fine-tuning an existing model is different from training a foundation model from scratch, and we aim to describe the underlying methods accurately.
As our research develops, we intend to share more models, documentation, experiments, and evaluations through this organisation.
π¬ Our Research Approach
We believe useful AI requires more than building a working demo.
Our approach is to:
- Identify a real problem worth investigating.
- Choose appropriate methods based on the task, data, compute, and available resources.
- Build and experiment with models and applications.
- Evaluate performance and limitations rather than relying on impressive demonstrations alone.
- Test with intended users and incorporate their feedback.
- Document what we learn so others can understand, reproduce, or improve the work.
We are particularly interested in making AI research and development more accessible to African students, engineers, and communities.
π Why Africa?
Africa has talented developers, researchers, educators, entrepreneurs, and communities with problems worth solving through locally relevant innovation.
However, access to computing resources, research funding, high-quality datasets, mentorship, and opportunities to collaborate can be limited.
We want to contribute to an ecosystem in which African AI builders can experiment, share knowledge, develop useful models, and participate in shaping the future of AI.
Our long-term ambition is to grow into a capable AI research and development organisation originating in Kenya, contributing both useful products and meaningful technical research.
We understand that this requires time, rigorous experimentation, partnerships, resources, and evidence of impact. We are building toward that ambition one project at a time.
π€ Work With Us
We welcome collaboration from:
- Farmers and agricultural experts who can help us evaluate ShambaDoctor KE.
