If you can force it to write, it's actually got pretty fresh prose from what I can tell. A heretic version would be quite interesting.

According to the arena it ranks 134 in creative writing, vs Gemma 4's 67 and Qwen3.5/3.6's 151.

Overall Gemma 4 is a far more powerful AI model than Glimmer or Qwen3.5/3.6. Glimmer and Qwen are grossly overfit to coding, math, and agentic work and are surprisingly bad at most other things and perform worse than similarly sized models released a long time ago such as Gemma 3 27b, such as writing highly repetitive stories filled with blatant contradictions and other stupid mistakes.

I think companies realize they only need to impress autistic coders with open source releases so they're giving up on balanced general purpose AI models.
