DESI DR2 Results II: Measurements of Baryon Acoustic Oscillations and Cosmological Constraints

We present baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurements from more than 14 million galaxies and quasars drawn from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Data Release 2 (DR2), based on three years of operation. For cosmology inference, these galaxy measurements are combined with DESI Lyman-α forest BAO results presented in a companion paper. The DR2 BAO results are consistent with DESI DR1 and SDSS, and their distance-redshift relationship matches those from recent compilations of supernovae (SNe) over the same redshift range. The results are well described by a flat ΛCDM model, but the parameters preferred by BAO are in mild, 2.3σ tension with those determined from the cosmic microwave background (CMB), although the DESI results are consistent with the acoustic angular scale θ_* that is well-measured by Planck. This tension is alleviated by dark energy with a time-evolving equation of state parametrized by w_0 and w_a, which provides a better fit to the data, with a favored solution in the quadrant with w_0>-1 and w_a<0. This solution is preferred over ΛCDM at 3.1σ for the combination of DESI BAO and CMB data. When also including SNe, the preference for a dynamical dark energy model over ΛCDM ranges from 2.8-4.2σ depending on which SNe sample is used. We present evidence from other data combinations which also favor the same behavior at high significance. From the combination of DESI and CMB we derive 95% upper limits on the sum of neutrino masses, finding sum m_ν<0.064 eV assuming ΛCDM and sum m_ν<0.16 eV in the w_0w_a model. Unless there is an unknown systematic error associated with one or more datasets, it is clear that ΛCDM is being challenged by the combination of DESI BAO with other measurements and that dynamical dark energy offers a possible solution.

The Bayesian view of DESI DR2 with unimpeded: Evidence and tension in a combined analysis with CMB and supernovae across cosmological models

We apply the unimpeded framework to perform a fully Bayesian reanalysis of the DESI DR2 data, using nested sampling with PolyChord to compute evidences for ΛCDM and seven extensions across combinations of DESI DR1/DR2, Planck CMB, supernovae (Pantheon+, Union3, DES-SN5YR, DES-Dovekie), and DES-Y1 weak lensing. The Bayesian Ockham's razor penalises extended models, yielding weaker or opposite preferences compared to Δχ^2-based analyses. For DESI DR2 BAO combined with Planck CMB alone, the DESI collaboration's 3.1σ frequentist preference for w_0w_aCDM is eliminated entirely: we obtain {ln B = -0.57{scriptstylepm0.26}}, modestly favouring ΛCDM. Adding DES-Dovekie, the recalibration of DES-SN5YR, maintains this concordance ({ln B = -0.30{scriptstylepm0.19}}). However, when the earlier DES-SN5YR calibration is included instead, the DESI collaboration's 4.2σ result survives the Bayesian Ockham penalty as a 3.07{scriptstylepm0.10},σ preference ({ln B = +3.32{scriptstylepm0.27}}). That this signal persists despite the Ockham penalty makes the role of tension quantification essential: our analysis traced the preference to the earlier DES-SN5YR calibration, which introduced a 2.95{scriptstylepm 0.04},σ conflict with DESI DR2 within ΛCDM -- a tension that stands out from the grid -- reduced to 1.96{scriptstylepm 0.04},σ with the DES-Dovekie recalibration. With DES-Dovekie, the Bayesian evidence for dynamical dark energy vanishes.

The Milky Way stellar halo is twisted and doubly broken: insights from DESI DR2 Milky Way Survey observation

Using K giants from the second data release (DR2) of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Milky Way (MW) Survey, we measure the shape, orientation, radial profile, and density anisotropies of the MW stellar halo over 8 kpc<r_GC<200 kpc. We identify a triaxial stellar halo (axes ratio 10:8:7), 43 degrees tilted from the disk, showing two break radii at sim16 kpc and sim76 kpc, likely associated with Gaia-Sausage/Enceladus (GSE) and Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), respectively. The inner stellar halo (<30 kpc) is oblate and aligned with the disk, whereas the outer stellar halo becomes prolate and perpendicular to the disk, consistent with the Vast Polar Structure of MW satellites. The twisted halo may arise from the disk-halo angular momentum shift triggered by the infall of a massive satellite. The anisotropic density distribution of the stellar halo is also measured, with successful re-identification of the Hercules-Aquila Cloud South/North (HAC-N/-S) and Virgo overdensities (VOD). Break radii are found at 15/30 kpc for VOD/HAC-N(-S). We identify the LMC transient density wake with a break radius at 60 kpc in the Pisces overdensity region. We also find new observational evidence of the LMC collective density wake, by showing a break radius at sim100 kpc in the northern Galactic cap with a clear density peak at 90 kpc. In the end, we found that more metal-poor halo stars are more radially extended. Our results provide important clues to the assembly and evolution of the MW stellar halo under the standard cosmic structure formation framework.

Dynamical Dark Energy from a Massive Vector Field in Generalized Proca Theory

In this paper, we emphasise the recent observational findings from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument Data Release 2 (DESI DR2), which provide compelling evidence for a possible deviation from the standard ΛCDM (Cold Dark Matter) cosmology, suggesting the presence of a dynamically evolving effective dark energy component. Motivated by this, we construct a theoretical framework in which a massive cosmological vector field, B^μ, couples non-minimally to the background curvature through marginal interactions, offering a controlled mechanism to realise the deviation from the ΛCDM model. A detailed analysis of the effective Equation of State (EoS) parameter w(tilde H) reveals a narrow region of parameter space consistent with current cosmological observations presented by DESI. The analysis yields a stringent upper bound for the coupling constant λ to be λ<2.98times10^{-11}, a very strong bound on mass 3.1356times10^{-66}~g leq m leq 3.3627times10^{-66}~g, and the admissible range -0.405 leq log_{10}tildeγleq -0.38 for which present-day value w_0 = w(tilde H = 1) corresponding to a deviation δ= w_0 + 1 that lies within the region 0.107 leq δleq 0.217. This interval reproduces the deviation inferred from the combined DESI, Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), and Pantheon+ data, reflecting a controlled departure from the ΛCDM behaviour. In summary, the results suggest that the proposed framework of a massive vector field can account for the departure from ΛCDM behaviour highlighted by DESI in the current cosmic acceleration. Furthermore, the framework approaches the ΛCDM behaviour in late-time tgtrsim28 Gyr, establishing a direct phenomenological link between the underlying parameters and the observed dynamical nature of dark energy.
