Surface defects in $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super Yang-Mills: exact results and holographic bootstrap

We study two-point functions of chiral primary operators in N=4 Super Yang-Mills in the presence of a half-BPS surface defect. Such a defect preserves only the diagonal combination of transverse rotations and of a global U(1) R-symmetry, so that the correlator depends on one additional cross-ratio and splits into sectors of definite angular charge. We solve the superconformal Ward identities and construct the bulk and defect superconformal blocks in all sectors, including the charged ones, which have no analogue for defects preserving transverse rotations. The solution contains a holomorphic sector, which we fix non-perturbatively by mapping it to a chiral algebra correlator. We extend this map to defects breaking transverse rotations, where it requires a redefinition of the modes of the two-dimensional current algebra, and use it to fix the charged sectors as well. We then use the defect dispersion relation to reconstruct the full correlator of the dimension-two chiral primary at leading order at large N and strong coupling. In the charged sectors long multiplets are absent and the answer is conjecturally exact in both N and the coupling; expanding it at weak coupling, we find perfect agreement with known results. From these correlators we extract infinitely many new pieces of defect CFT data. Finally, we reproduce the strong-coupling answer by an independent Witten diagram bootstrap on the rotation-invariant locus.

An Infinite Family of Non-Rational VOAs from Strongly Coupled 4d Higgsless SCFTs

We study an infinite family of strongly coupled four-dimensional mathcal N=2 superconformal field theories (SCFTs) distinguished by a trivial Higgs branch, known as the (A_2,D_{3m+1}) Argyre-Douglas theories. We propose that their associated vertex operator algebras (VOAs) are the doublet algebras mathcal A(4m+2), an infinite family of non-rational vertex operator superalgebras with a remarkably simple strong generating set of only three fields. We provide several highly nontrivial checks of this proposal. In particular, we reproduce the four-dimensional conformal anomalies a and c from the VOA and analytically prove the exact equality between the Schur index of the SCFT and the supercharacter of the VOA. A key ingredient is a diagonal-gauging realization of the (A_2,D_{3m+1}) theories in terms of two simpler building blocks, which makes the Schur-index computation tractable. Remarkably, we find that the resulting Schur index of the (A_2,D_{3m+1}) theory coincides with that of mathcal N=4 SU(2) Super-Yang-Mills theory, up to an overall prefactor and an appropriate identification of fugacities. We also discuss a generalization to the two-parameter family (A_{2s},D_{(2s+1)m+1}), whose members likewise have trivial Higgs branches and admit diagonal-gauging realizations. A particularly interesting subfamily is (A_{2s},D_{2s+2}), for which the four-dimensional conformal anomalies coincide, a=c. Our results reveal a systematic connection between Higgsless SCFTs, diagonal gauging, and strongly finite but non-rational vertex operator algebras.

Large Landscape of 4d Superconformal Field Theories from Small Gauge Theories

We systematically explore the space of renormalization group flows of four-dimensional N=1 superconformal field theories (SCFTs) triggered by relevant deformations, as well as by coupling to free chiral multiplets with relevant operators. In this way, we classify all possible fixed point SCFTs that can be obtained from certain rank 1 and 2 supersymmetric gauge theories with small amount of matter multiplets, identifying 7,346 inequivalent fixed points which pass a series of non-trivial consistency checks. This set of fixed points exhibits interesting statistical behaviors, including a narrow distribution of central charges (a, c), a correlation between the number of relevant operators and the ratio a/c, and trends in the lightest operator dimension versus a/c. The ratio a/c of this set is distributed between 0.7228 and 1.2100, where the upper bound is larger than that of previously known interacting SCFTs. Moreover, we find a plethora of highly non-perturbative phenomena, such as (super)symmetry enhancements, operator decoupling, non-commuting renormalization group flows, and dualities. We especially identify amongst these fixed points a new SCFT that has smaller central charges (a, c) = (633{2000},683{2000}) than that of the deformed minimal Argyres-Douglas theory, as well as novel Lagrangian duals for certain N=1 deformed Argyres-Douglas theories. We provide a website https://qft.kaist.ac.kr/landscape to navigate through our set of fixed points.

Accelerating the Search for Superconductors Using Machine Learning

Prediction of critical temperature (T_c) of a superconductor remains a significant challenge in condensed matter physics. While the BCS theory explains superconductivity in conventional superconductors, there is no framework to predict T_c of unconventional, higher T_{c} superconductors. Quantum Structure Diagrams (QSD) were successful in establishing structure-property relationship for superconductors, quasicrystals, and ferroelectric materials starting from chemical composition. Building on the QSD ideas, we demonstrate that the principal component analysis of superconductivity data uncovers the clustering of various classes of superconductors. We use machine learning analysis and cleaned databases of superconductors to develop predictive models of T_c of a superconductor using its chemical composition. Earlier studies relied on datasets with inconsistencies, leading to suboptimal predictions. To address this, we introduce a data-cleaning workflow to enhance the statistical quality of superconducting databases by eliminating redundancies and resolving inconsistencies. With this improvised database, we apply a supervised machine learning framework and develop a Random Forest model to predict superconductivity and T_c as a function of descriptors motivated from Quantum Structure Diagrams. We demonstrate that this model generalizes effectively in reasonably accurate prediction of T_{c} of compounds outside the database. We further employ our model to systematically screen materials across materials databases as well as various chemically plausible combinations of elements and predict Tl_{5}Ba_{6}Ca_{6}Cu_{9}O_{29} to exhibit superconductivity with a T_{c} sim 105 K. Being based on the descriptors used in QSD's, our model bypasses structural information and predicts T_{c} merely from the chemical composition.

Agentic Fusion of Large Atomic and Language Models to Accelerate Superconductors Discovery

The discovery of novel materials is critical for global energy and quantum technology transitions. While deep learning has fundamentally reshaped this landscape, existing predictive or generative models typically operate in isolation, lacking the autonomous orchestration required to execute the full discovery process. Here we present ElementsClaw, an agentic framework for materials discovery that synergizes Large Atomic Models (LAMs) with Large Language Models (LLMs). In response to varied human queries, ElementsClaw orchestrates a suite of LAM tools finetuned from our proposed 1-billion-parameter model Elements for atomic-scale numerical computation, while leveraging LLMs for high-level semantic reasoning. This shift moves AI-driven materials science from isolated processes toward integrated and human interactive discovery. Applied to superconductors, ElementsClaw screens 2.4 million crystals in just 28 GPU hours to identify 68,000 high-confidence candidates (The complete dataset of screened superconductors is available at https://developer.damo-academy.com/material), expanding known superconducting space by orders of magnitude compared to datasets curated over decades. Critically, ElementsClaw achieves a high success rate in identifying superconductors hidden in literature and discovers four novel experimentally verified superconductors, exemplified by Zr3ScRe8 with a transition temperature of 6.8 K and HfZrRe4 at 6.7 K. Together, our results establish a knowledge integrated, autonomously orchestrated, and experimentally grounded paradigm for materials discovery.

Safety of dynamical SUSY breaking and gaugino condensation in models of spontaneous CP violation

Solving the strong CP problem with spontaneous CP violation (SCPV) in SUSY requires that the constant term of the superpotential and the SUSY-breaking F-term be real to high accuracy. When both are generated dynamically, by gaugino condensation and by dynamical SUSY breaking (DSB), their phases need not vanish even if every theta-angle vanishes and every coupling is real; e.g., the multivalued non-perturbative superpotential may sit on a branch with a complex phase. In fact, gaugino condensation, in pure SUSY Yang-Mills theory and in its Affleck-Dine-Seiberg generalization, is safe only for N_c - N_f in {1,2} (N_c = 2 for pure SYM); otherwise the phase of the constant term reaches the gluino mass through anomaly mediation. The SUSY-breaking F-term is the main source of the MSSM soft masses, including the gluino mass, so its phase reaches theta-bar as well. In the framework of global SUSY, the 3-2 model introduces no phase. The ISS model is safe for non-degenerate quark masses in that sector; in the degenerate (or nearly degenerate) limit, however, a complex vacuum orientation can generate an O(1) phase. The IYIT model can generate a purely imaginary F-term: for roughly half of the real Yukawa parameter space, the meson VEV is purely imaginary and CP is spontaneously broken. In all three, the vacuum of the field coupled to the messengers is aligned with the constant term, so a complex constant term generates a strong CP phase through a second route, separate from anomaly mediation.

Tessellations and Speiser graphs arising from meromorphic functions on simply connected Riemann surfaces

Motivated by W. P. Thurston, we ask: What is the shape of a meromorphic function on a simply connected Riemann surface Ω_z? We consider Speiser functions, i.e. meromorphic functions on a simply connected Riemann surface, that have a finite number q at least 2 of singular (critical or asymptotic) values. As a first result, we make precise the correspondence between: Speiser functions w(z), Speiser Riemann surfaces R_w(z), Speiser q-tessellation, and analytic Speiser graphs of index q. As the second main result, we characterize tessellations with alternating colors (equivalently abstract pre-Speiser graphs) that are realized by Speiser functions on Ω_z. The characterization is in terms of the q-regular extension problem of bipartite planar graphs. As third main results, the Speiser Riemann surface R_w(z) can be constructed by isometric glueing of a finite number of types of sheets, where each sheet is a maximal domain of single-valuedness of the inverse of w(z). Furthermore, a unique decomposition of R_w(z) into maximal logarithmic towers and a soul is provided. Using vector fields we recognize that logarithmic towers come in two flavors: exponential or h-tangent blocks, directly related to the exponential or the hyperbolic tangent functions on the upper half plane. The surface R_w(z) of a finite Speiser function is characterized by surgery of a rational block and a finite number of exponential or h-tangent blocks.

Multiflavor Mott insulators in quantum materials and ultracold atoms

Mott insulators with large and active (or multiflavor) local Hilbert spaces widely occur in quantum materials and ultracold atomic systems, and are dubbed "multiflavor Mott insulators". For these multiflavored Mott insulating materials, the spin-only description with the quadratic spin interactions is often insufficient to capture the major physical processes. In the situation with active orbitals, the Kugel-Khomskii superexchange model was then proposed. We briefly review this historical model and discuss the modern developments beyond the original spin-orbital context. These include and are not restricted to the 4d/5d transition metal compounds with the spin-orbit-entangled J=3/2 quadruplets, the rare-earth magnets with two weakly-separated crystal field doublets, breathing magnets and/or the cluster and molecular magnets, et al. We explain the microscopic origin of the emergent Kugel-Khomskii physics in each realization with some emphasis on the J=3/2 quadruplets, and refer the candidate multiflavor Mott insulators as "J=3/2 Mott insulators". For the ultracold atoms, we review the multiflavor Mott insulator realization with the ultracold alkaline and alkaline-earth atoms on the optical lattices. Despite a large local Hilbert space from the atomic hyperfine spin states, the system could naturally realize a large symmetry group such as the Sp(N) and SU(N) symmetries. These ultracold atomic systems lie in the large-N regime of these symmetry groups and are characterized by strong quantum fluctuations. The Kugel-Khomskii physics and the exotic quantum ground states with the "baryon-like" physics can appear in various limits. We conclude with our vision and outlook on this subject.

Extremal black hole mimickers: geometry, stability, and long-delay signal trains

We present a spacetime that serves as a horizonless mimicker of extremal black holes. Unlike previously studied mimickers of black holes with non-degenerate horizons, whose geometries are of the wormhole type and consist of two asymptotically flat regions connected by a very long throat, the mimicker of an extremal black hole possesses a single asymptotically flat region at one end and an infinitely long throat at the other. In the throat region, the spacetime approaches the direct-product geometry M_{1,1} times S^2, where M_{1,1} is two-dimensional Minkowski spacetime and S^2 is the two-sphere. We investigate scalar-field dynamics and the fate of the Aretakis instability. Although Aretakis-like modes arise in a local analysis of the throat, they do not lead to a physical instability of the mimicker. A scalar perturbation initially localized in the throat gives rise, at late times, to a sequence of signals with a characteristic separation t_{rm delay}sim 1/λ, where λll 1 is a deformation parameter. This timescale is parametrically larger than the echo time t_{rm echo}sim ln(1/λ) characteristic of non-extremal black-hole mimickers. We refer to this sequence as a {\it long-delay signal train}. Geometrically, the periodicity of the long-delay signals is associated with periodic geodesics on S^2. We then extend the construction to extremal Kerr. In this case, the throat region approaches a generalized product geometry involving M_{1,1} and a two-dimensional surface Σ_2. The corresponding signals are expected to form a quasi-periodic signal train, reflecting the quasi-periodic geodesic motion on Σ_2. We also comment on the generalization to wormhole mimickers of non-extremal black holes and on the implications of these results for unitarity in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence.

S2SNet: A Pretrained Neural Network for Superconductivity Discovery

Superconductivity allows electrical current to flow without any energy loss, and thus making solids superconducting is a grand goal of physics, material science, and electrical engineering. More than 16 Nobel Laureates have been awarded for their contribution to superconductivity research. Superconductors are valuable for sustainable development goals (SDGs), such as climate change mitigation, affordable and clean energy, industry, innovation and infrastructure, and so on. However, a unified physics theory explaining all superconductivity mechanism is still unknown. It is believed that superconductivity is microscopically due to not only molecular compositions but also the geometric crystal structure. Hence a new dataset, S2S, containing both crystal structures and superconducting critical temperature, is built upon SuperCon and Material Project. Based on this new dataset, we propose a novel model, S2SNet, which utilizes the attention mechanism for superconductivity prediction. To overcome the shortage of data, S2SNet is pre-trained on the whole Material Project dataset with Masked-Language Modeling (MLM). S2SNet makes a new state-of-the-art, with out-of-sample accuracy of 92% and Area Under Curve (AUC) of 0.92. To the best of our knowledge, S2SNet is the first work to predict superconductivity with only information of crystal structures. This work is beneficial to superconductivity discovery and further SDGs. Code and datasets are available in https://github.com/zjuKeLiu/S2SNet

A Topological and Operator Algebraic Framework for Asynchronous Lattice Dynamical Systems

I introduce a novel mathematical framework integrating topological dynamics, operator algebras, and ergodic geometry to study lattices of asynchronous metric dynamical systems. Each node in the lattice carries an internal flow represented by a one-parameter family of operators, evolving on its own time scale. I formalize stratified state spaces capturing multiple levels of synchronized behavior, define an asynchronous evolution metric that quantifies phase-offset distances between subsystems, and characterize emergent coherent topologies arising when subsystems synchronize. Within this framework, I develop formal operators for the evolution of each subsystem and give precise conditions under which phase-aligned synchronization occurs across the lattice. The main results include: (1) the existence and uniqueness of coherent (synchronized) states under a contractive coupling condition, (2) stability of these coherent states and criteria for their emergence as a collective phase transition in a continuous operator topology, and (3) the influence of symmetries, with group-invariant coupling leading to flow-invariant synchrony subspaces and structured cluster dynamics. Proofs are given for each theorem, demonstrating full mathematical rigor. In a final section, I discuss hypothetical applications of this framework to symbolic lattice systems (e.g. subshifts), to invariant group actions on dynamical lattices, and to operator fields over stratified manifolds in the spirit of noncommutative geometry. Throughout, I write in the first person to emphasize the exploratory nature of this work. The paper avoids any reference to cosmology or observers, focusing instead on clean, formal mathematics suitable for a broad array of dynamical systems.

Quantum Gravity from Gluing Consistency: AdS/CFT to Spin-Foams

We argue that BF theory with SO(d+1,1) gauge group provides a SymTFT ''skeleton'' for building AdS_{d+1}/CFT_d pairs via gluing consistency as the bootstrap principle, loosely analogous to how compact Chern-Simons theory is a TQFT skeleton for rational CFTs. This is a non-perturbative bulk framework for quantum gravity. The bootstrap is formulated as presentation independence of physical amplitudes within a universal, defect-closed BF sewing calculus, which includes Wilson lines, codimension-two monodromy defects, and their junctions. The flat BF connection encodes the conformal geometry of the boundary, while Wilson-line path integrals construct candidate quantum-gravity microstates and charge sectors. When the bootstrapped spectrum has a stress tensor, Ward identities naturally connect it to the B-field, a relation we call generalized simplicity. In large-N, large-gap regimes admitting a gravitational EFT, this motivates the introduction of an effective notion of the B-field. In the Einstein limit, this becomes the ''simplicity'' relation used in spin-foam models. Conventional spin-foam models try to obtain gravity by constraining BF theory. We suggest instead that BF theory is the Platonic sewing skeleton, from which theories are to be bootstrapped. Despite the topological nature of the skeleton, perturbative local bulk fields can emerge via Wilson-towers of multi-trace primaries, reproducing their one-loop determinants. We note that the BF Fourier kernel is a suggestive higher-dimensional analogue of the modular-S structure. Because the bulk gluing principle in itself does not require a boundary description, the framework is conceptually broader than AdS/CFT. We sketch how de Sitter space may fit into this picture, with a natural role for observers. Our approach elevates gluing consistency to a universal bulk principle underlying theories of quantum gravity.

Exploring Line Bundle Standard Models with Transformers

We propose a Transformer-based Reinforcement Learning architecture, "LB-Explorer", to search for heterotic line bundle standard models arising from compactifications on smooth Calabi-Yau (CY) threefolds. We construct E_8times E_8 vacua with SU(5) symmetry, where the SU(5) can be further broken to the Standard Model gauge group via discrete Wilson lines. We test the LB-Explorer environment on complete intersection Calabi-Yau (CICY) manifolds, though the neural network architecture naturally generalizes to any CY admitting a smooth, simplicial Mori cone and a freely-acting discrete symmetry. The LB-Explorer efficiently learns constraints on the line bundle sums, guaranteeing the E_8 gauge embedding, anomaly cancellation, poly-stability (supersymmetry), chirality of the spectrum, and the absence of exotic matter. Valid configurations can be subsequently filtered by imposing the missing constraints, such as the equivariant structure of the line bundle sum and further requirements on the particle spectrum. In this direction, we introduce a hybrid architecture incorporating CP-SAT solvers that aims to impose some of the conditions exactly by perturbing solutions found by the LB-Explorer. The versatility and scalability of the LB-Explorer make it a powerful tool for navigating the string landscape with a large number of moduli. The code and tools necessary to reproduce our findings are available at https://github.com/alexmininno/LB-Explorer

Precision holography for non-conformal branes

We set up precision holography for the non-conformal branes preserving 16 supersymmetries. The near-horizon limit of all such p-brane solutions with p \leq 4, including the case of fundamental string solutions, is conformal to AdS_{p+2} x S^{8-p} with a linear dilaton. We develop holographic renormalization for all these cases. In particular, we obtain the most general asymptotic solutions with appropriate Dirichlet boundary conditions, find the corresponding counterterms and compute the holographic 1-point functions, all in complete generality and at the full non-linear level. The result for the stress energy tensor properly defines the notion of mass for backgrounds with such asymptotics. The analysis is done both in the original formulation of the method and also using a radial Hamiltonian analysis. The latter formulation exhibits most clearly the existence of an underlying generalized conformal structure. In the cases of Dp-branes, the corresponding dual boundary theory, the maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory SYM_{p+1}, indeed exhibits the generalized conformal structure found at strong coupling. We compute the holographic 2-point functions of the stress energy tensor and gluon operator and show they satisfy the expected Ward identities and the constraints of generalized conformal structure. The holographic results are also manifestly compatible with the M-theory uplift, with the asymptotic solutions, counterterms, one and two point functions etc of the IIA F1 and D4 appropriately descending from those of M2 and M5 branes, respectively. We present a few applications including the computation of condensates in Witten's model of holographic YM_4 theory.

Beyond the Ergodic Wall: A Discrete Geometric Physics Sandbox for Analysing AI Scaling Limits and Complexity Collapse

This paper exposes the ergodic ceiling and thermodynamic inefficiency of current deep learning, which converges to a statistical average of historic human knowledge. True semantic novelty requires a path-dependent, spatiotemporally bounded observer (a Data LifeCone) to inject non-ergodic insight, achieving KL divergence and avoiding manifold lock-in. AI Safety must recognise that a mature Artificial Superintelligence (ASI) would regard human-AI symbiosis as a thermodynamic necessity to avoid model collapse. We therefore propose hard physical containment via a digital physics sandbox powered by a Holographic E8 Projection Engine to verify models against real-world constraints. Spacetime is modeled as an information substrate of nested face-centered cubic (FCC) lattices of oscillating Planck-scale spheres maximizing local information and entropy density. Cut-and-project methods from the E8 root lattice produce a quasi-crystalline geometry where tetrahedral voids support SU chiral structure and elastic-shear eigenvalues generate candidate mass spectra. Rest mass is treated as discrete, integer microstate counts on local holographic boundaries (Bekenstein bound), replacing floating-point approximations with strict integer arithmetic to provide an information-theoretic definition of matter. Stable particles emerge as recurring lattice dislocations, and continuum recovery proceeds via variational renormalisation-group flows and Fourier Neural Operators that learn continuous spectral operators to recover the Schrödinger equation as an emergent statistical description. Crucially, these top-down topological constraints offer a mechanism for "NP-to-P" complexity collapse: by restricting an algorithm's proposal space to physically conserved causal trajectories, the sandbox prunes the combinatorial tree to deterministic, polynomial-time paths.

EFT (String) Tower Building

We develop a bottom-up framework to reconstruct the asymptotic spectrum of light towers in four-dimensional N=1 effective field theories directly from their Kähler potential. Our construction uses the Integral Scaling Relation, which relates the mass scales of towers becoming light at infinite distance to the tensions of EFT strings, together with the Emergent String Conjecture applied recursively upon decompactification. These conditions organize the tower scaling vectors into a lattice generated by the EFT-string vectors and select the globally consistent tower polytopes. When applied to Kähler potentials arising from string compactifications, our algorithm precisely reproduces the known arrangements of towers and duality frames. We then classify the admissible polytopes for asymptotic Kähler potentials Ksim-log P(s), with P(s) a homogeneous polynomial of degree at most seven, and show that certain apparently consistent Kähler potentials are incompatible with the assumed quantum-gravity constraints. For general polynomials, additional restrictions arise from gluing the tower arrangements across different growth sectors. Remarkably, every tower polytope allowed by our reconstruction can be obtained as a concrete slice of the polytope associated with M-theory on a Joyce G_2-manifold. This provides evidence for a form of string universality in which EFT strings act as the fundamental building blocks of the UV tower structure in the EFT perturbative regimes.

Counting higher-rank sheaves on toric threefolds

We develop an equivariant K-theoretic vertex formalism for a colored, abelianized higher-rank sector on smooth projective toric threefolds X. Nonzero first Chern classes are encoded as magnetic fluxes and absorbed into line-bundle twists, after which the virtual character is redistributed into finite perturbative, vertex, and edge contributions. We compute the resulting (unreduced and trace-free) virtual dimensions and analyze the interaction terms relevant to a possible reduction to rank one. We emphasize that, on a compact toric threefold, colored partitions do not classify all torus-fixed stable higher-rank sheaves: the resulting series is therefore a proposed abelianized/framed vertex series unless an additional comparison theorem with the full stable-sheaf moduli problem is supplied. When the threefold obstruction theory is not available in the desired form, we pass to the local Calabi--Yau fourfold Y=Tot(K_X) and formulate the corresponding colored DT4 vertex. A K_X-twisted tautological insertion removes fixed points with nontrivial fiber layers, reducing solid partitions to plane partitions at the level of the local vertex. In rank one we give a scheme-theoretic explanation: the Hilbert functor of subschemes of X is canonically isomorphic to the constrained Hilbert functor of subschemes of Y lying scheme-theoretically in the fixed zero section. Under the hypotheses of the DT4 K-theoretic Lefschetz/virtual-pullback formalism, the associated support insertion reduces the rank-one fourfold theory to the threefold theory. We keep this global rank-one statement logically distinct from the higher-rank colored-vertex reduction.
