MLFont: Machine Learning-Driven Font Subsetting and Range-Compact Unicode-Range Slicing for Low-Latency Web Typography

CSS3 @font-face rules with unicode-range descriptors partition web fonts into downloadable slices. While Latin fonts need ~20 KB in WOFF2, Pan-European (LGC) and East Asian (CJK) fonts contain 2,297-30,759 codepoints (158 KB-5.9 MB in WOFF2), where heuristic partitioning causes unused-glyph downloads, high HTTP RTT, CSS bloat, or missing-glyph fallbacks. We present MLFont, a machine learning and optimization framework that learns font slicing strategies from corpora via three stages: (1) a Zipfian High-Frequency Tier (most) isolating top-frequency codepoints; (2) a Latent Co-Occurrence Topic Tier using Online Variational Bayes LDA (Online LDA) or a Deep Neural Network Topic Model (DNNTM) with Shannon Entropy Difference Loss and Sinkhorn-Knopp normalization; and (3) a Memetic Range-Compact Genetic Algorithm (GA) with Potts-Viterbi dynamic programming and island bridging that minimizes topic discrepancy and CSS fragmentation. Across five Google Noto fonts (LGC, KR, JP, TC, SC), MLFont cuts 3G per-glyph latency by 56.7%-75.3% over single-file delivery and 46.1%-66.3% over equal-bin baselines on CJK with 100% coverage, reduces CSS intervals by 17.9%-41.7%, and achieves 1.56x-6.09x cold-cache speedups (65.4%-84.9% CJK and 44.7% LGC bandwidth savings) across 20 websites in simulator and Headless Chrome benchmarks (45/45 exact slice-set parity). Structure and Dynamics of the Young Massive Star Cluster Westerlund 1

We present a structural analysis of the young massive star cluster Westerlund 1 (Wd 1). With multi-epoch Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations, we measure the proper motions of 10346 stars and determine their kinematic memberships by fitting a Gaussian mixture model to their proper motions. After correcting for extinction and completeness, we model the stellar density distribution and confirm the presence of an elongation with an eccentricity of 0.71. The eccentricity decreases slightly with increasing mass. We fit the radial profile with the Elson, Fall, and Freeman model, observing a decrease in the core radius with increasing mass, indicative of weak but detectable mass segregation. This finding is further supported by a measured mass segregation ratio of Lambda_rm MSR=1.11pm0.11, only above 1 by 1sigma, and slightly shorter minimum spanning tree length for higher mass bins. The cluster has a 1D velocity dispersion of 3.42 pm 0.10~km,s^{-1}, suggesting it is subvirial. The subvirial state implies either exceptionally high star formation efficiency or inefficient stellar feedback caused by local gas expulsion before stars reach the cluster. The crossing time is 0.30 Myr and the relaxation time is 0.26 Gyr. Given the age of Wd 1 of 10.7 Myr, we expect evident mass segregation for stars more massive than 10~M_odot, which accounts for the minor mass segregation found in the mass range of 1.00x201312.14~M_odot in this work. This suggests the overall mass segregation in Wd 1 is not primordial.

The autoPET3 Challenge: Automated Lesion Segmentation in Whole-Body PET/CT $\unicode{x2013}$ Multitracer Multicenter Generalization

We report the design and results of the third autoPET challenge (MICCAI 2024), which benchmarked automated lesion segmentation in whole-body PET/CT under a compositional generalization setting. Training data comprised 1,014 [18F]-FDG PET/CT studies from the University Hospital Tübingen and 597 [18F]/[68Ga]-PSMA PET/CT studies from the LMU University Hospital Munich, constituting the largest publicly available annotated PSMA PET/CT dataset to date. The held-out test set of 200 studies covered four tracer-center combinations, two of which represented unseen compositional pairings. A complementary data-centric award category isolated the contribution of data handling strategies by restricting participants to a fixed baseline model. Seventeen teams submitted 27 algorithms, predominantly nnU-Net-based 3D networks with PET/CT channel concatenation. The top-ranked algorithm achieved a mean DSC of 0.66, FNV of 3.18 mL, and FPV of 2.78 mL across all four test conditions, improving DSC by 8% and reducing the false-negative volume by 5 mL relative to the provided baseline. Ranking was stable across bootstrap resampling and alternative ranking schemes for the top tier. Beyond the benchmark, we provide an in-depth analysis of segmentation performance at the patient and lesion level. Three main conclusions can be drawn: (1) in-domain multitracer PET/CT segmentation is sufficient and probably approaching reader agreement; (2) compositional generalization to unseen tracer-center combinations remains an open problem mainly driven by systematic volume overestimation; (3) heterogeneity and case difficulty drive performance variation substantially more than the choice of algorithm among top-ranked teams.
