A minimal model for rate-induced tipping to extinction

Rate-induced tipping ("R-tipping") in ecological modelling is characterised by too-rapid change of an environmental parameter causing collapse of a population without any bifurcation being crossed ("B-tipping"). A well-known example of a slow-fast predator-prey model in which R-tipping is observed [Vanselow, Wieczorek, Feudel, Journal of Theoretical Biology, 479, 64-72 (2019)] suffers from unecological "resurgence", whereby populations driven to functional extinction recover towards stable coexistence. We propose an analytically tractable model, incorporating a strong Allee effect into the prey dynamics in a slow-fast Lotka-Volterra-type predator-prey system, which induces bistability and thus renders the extinction state a genuine attractor. Applying geometric singular perturbation theory (GSPT), we describe the dynamics of the extended model that is obtained by "ramping" of the inverse prey carrying capacity. We show the presence of a parabolic-shaped, folded critical manifold which admits a folded saddle singularity, the strong canard of which separates solutions that track the moving coexistence state from those that tip to extinction. The analytical simplicity of our model allows us to derive explicit expressions for the critical rate that separates "tracking" from "tipping" dynamics. Finally, we argue that our system represents a minimal model for rate-induced tipping to extinction, in that it incorporates three essential ingredients: bistability, a folded critical manifold, and a folded-saddle-type canard.

Emergent magnetic nonanalyticity in Dirac altermagnets

Symmetry has long provided the organizing principle for understanding how materials respond to external perturbations. Here we show that what is permitted by symmetry need not be what actually emerges from the underlying system, and this distinction becomes particularly consequential for symmetry-related gapless Dirac fermions such as in altermagnets. A perturbation that shifts the Dirac points drives a Lifshitz reconstruction and generates an intrinsically nonanalytic effective potential, giving rise to undiscovered singular responses. In Dirac altermagnets, this nonanalyticity acquires a magnetic manifestation through C-paired spin-polarized Dirac cones: breaking the pairing symmetry C lifts their degeneracy and converts the associated Lifshitz reconstruction into an itinerant magnetization. As a consequence, piezomagnetism, the induction of a net magnetization by a mechanical strain, becomes nonlinear and nonanalytic, with Mproptosgn(varepsilon)varepsilon^2, whereas the linear response is absent despite being allowed by symmetry. Accordingly, the leading response cannot be inferred from the conventional symmetry-based paradigm of material response built upon the cornerstones of Neumann's principle and analytic Landau expansion. First-principles calculations identify the monolayer Fe_2S as a candidate material realization for such singular magnetic responses. These results suggest quantum singularities as a new degree of freedom for engineering material responses.

Implicit Gaussian process representation of vector fields over arbitrary latent manifolds

Gaussian processes (GPs) are popular nonparametric statistical models for learning unknown functions and quantifying the spatiotemporal uncertainty in data. Recent works have extended GPs to model scalar and vector quantities distributed over non-Euclidean domains, including smooth manifolds appearing in numerous fields such as computer vision, dynamical systems, and neuroscience. However, these approaches assume that the manifold underlying the data is known, limiting their practical utility. We introduce RVGP, a generalisation of GPs for learning vector signals over latent Riemannian manifolds. Our method uses positional encoding with eigenfunctions of the connection Laplacian, associated with the tangent bundle, readily derived from common graph-based approximation of data. We demonstrate that RVGP possesses global regularity over the manifold, which allows it to super-resolve and inpaint vector fields while preserving singularities. Furthermore, we use RVGP to reconstruct high-density neural dynamics derived from low-density EEG recordings in healthy individuals and Alzheimer's patients. We show that vector field singularities are important disease markers and that their reconstruction leads to a comparable classification accuracy of disease states to high-density recordings. Thus, our method overcomes a significant practical limitation in experimental and clinical applications.

Parabolic-elliptic and indirect-direct simplifications in chemotaxis systems driven by indirect signalling

Singular limits for the following indirect signalling chemotaxis system align* \left\{ array{lllllll} \partial_t n = \Delta n - \nabla \cdot (n \nabla c ) & in \Omega\times(0,\infty) , \varepsilon \partial_t c = \Delta c - c + w & in \Omega\times(0,\infty), \varepsilon \partial_t w = \tau \Delta w - w + n & in \Omega\times (0,\infty), \partial_\nu n = \partial_\nu c = \partial_\nu w = 0, &on \partial\Omega\times (0,\infty) %(n,c,w)_{t=0} = (n_0,c_0,w_0) & on \Omega, array \right. align* are investigated. More precisely, we study parabolic-elliptic simplification, or PES, varepsilonto 0^+ with fixed tau>0 up to the critical dimension N=4, and indirect-direct simplification, or IDS, (varepsilon, tau)to (0^+,0^+) up to the critical dimension N=2. These are relevant in biological situations where the signalling process is on a much faster time scale compared to the species diffusion and all interactions. Showing singular limits in critical dimensions is challenging. To deal with the PES, we carefully combine the entropy function, an Adam-type inequality, the regularisation of slow evolution, and an energy equation method to obtain strong convergence in representative spaces. For the IDS, a bootstrap argument concerning the L^p-energy function is devised, which allows us to obtain suitable uniform bounds for the singular limits. Moreover, in both scenarios, we also present the convergence rates, where the effect of the initial layer and the convergence to the critical manifold are also revealed.

mathbfλ-VAE: Variance Equalization for Posterior Collapse

Variational Autoencoders (VAEs) frequently suffer from posterior collapse, a failure mode in which the approximate posterior converges to the prior, rendering the latent code uninformative. Despite extensive research, a unified account of why collapse occurs has remained an open question. We identify and formalize two logically independent but coupled causes. Gradient imbalance occurs when the decoder's reconstruction signal vanishes faster than the KL regularization pressure as the posterior widens. Information gap occurs when the stochastic sampling step discards a substantial fraction of the encoder's computed representation, attenuating decoder sensitivity and making collapse inexpensive. Both causes share the same collapse trajectory, and we show that the information gap is algebraically equivalent to mismatch between the aggregate posterior and the prior, unifying two pathologies. Subsequently, we introduce λ-VAE, which resolves both causes through a single modification to the reparameterization step: the sampling noise is scaled by per-dimension exponent, while the KL penalty retains the original posterior variance. This asymmetry shifts the stable training attractor away from the degenerate collapsed state, driving all latent dimensions toward the same equilibrium -- a mechanism we term variance equalization. A closed-form optimal exponent per dimension follows from a net information gain objective, with a single hyperparameter controlling the reconstruction-generation tradeoff. We validate on standard benchmarks (Binary MNIST, Binary Omniglot, CIFAR-10, CelebA-64), showing consistent reductions in collapsed dimensions, information capacity gains of up to 2.8times nats, and reconstruction quality improvements of up to +0.33 BPD.
