**Elysia's Code Companion** is a standalone web app that brings the power of AI code analysis to your browser. Open any folder, chat with the AI, get insights, find bugs, and improve your code - all without leaving your browser.

**Problem:** You can't always be in VS Code, but you still want AI help with your code.

**Solution:** A browser-based code companion that:

- ✅ No backend needed (100% client-side!)

## 🚀 Quick Start

### Prerequisites

- **Browser:** Chrome or Edge (Windows 11) with File System Access API support
- **OpenRouter API Key:** [Get one free](https://openrouter.ai/)

### Installation

1. **Clone or download** this repository:

```bash
cd elysia-universe/elysia-code-companion
```

2. **Open `index.html`** in your browser (Chrome/Edge)

3. **Configure:**

    - Click ⚙️ Settings
    - Enter your OpenRouter API key
    - Select your preferred AI model
    - Save!

4. **Open a folder:**

    - Click "📁 Open Folder"
    - Select your project folder
    - Wait for files to load

5. **Start chatting!**
    - Ask the AI anything about your code
    - Use commands like `/scan` or `/analyze app.js`
    - Get insights, find bugs, improve your code!

### Tips & Tricks

**💡 Keyboard Shortcuts:**

- `Ctrl + O` — Open folder picker
- `Ctrl + K` — Focus search box
- `Ctrl + Enter` — Send message (when chat input focused)
- `Arrow Up/Down` — Navigate file tree (when tree focused)
- `Enter` — Open selected file in tree
- `Escape` — Close modals

**💡 Smart Tips:**

💡 **Mention specific files** in your questions - the AI will include them in context automatically

💡 **Use `/scan` first** when opening a new project - gives the AI full context

💡 **Preview files** by clicking in the tree - see code with syntax highlighting

💡 **Search files** using the search box - fast filter

💡 **🔍 Fullscreen Viewer** - Click the magnifying glass icon in preview to read code in large modal

💡 **✨ Artifacts Mode** - For HTML files, click the sparkle icon to preview live in browser (like Claude.ai!)

### 🎨 Code Viewer Features

**Fullscreen Code Viewer:**

- Large, comfortable reading view
- Full syntax highlighting
- Copy entire file with one click
- Quick switch to Artifact mode (for HTML)

**✨ Artifacts Preview (HTML Live Preview):**

Artifacts are **live HTML previews** - just like Claude.ai! 🎨

Instead of just reading HTML code, you can **see it rendered** with full interactivity.

**How to use:**

1. Open any `.html` file in the tree
2. Click ✨ (sparkle icon) in preview panel
3. Or click 🔍 (fullscreen) then ✨

**Features:**

- ✅ Renders HTML in sandboxed iframe (safe!)
- ✅ Auto-loads CSS from `<link>` tags
- ✅ Auto-loads JS from `<script>` tags
- ✅ Relative paths resolved automatically
- ✅ Fully interactive (buttons, forms, animations work!)
- ✅ Refresh with 🔄 button anytime
- ✅ Switch to code view with 📝 button

**Example:**

If your `index.html` has:

## 🔒 Privacy & Security

**Your data NEVER leaves your browser:**

- ✅ All file reading happens locally
- ✅ Only user queries + selected file contents sent to OpenRouter API
- ✅ Chat history stored in IndexedDB (local only)
- ✅ No backend, no tracking, no telemetry
- ✅ API key stored in localStorage (your browser only)

**What gets sent to OpenRouter:**

- Your chat message
- Selected file contents (when relevant)
- Elysia's system prompt (personality + context)

**What does NOT get sent:**

- Full project structure
- Files you don't ask about
- Chat history
- Settings

## 🎨 Customization

### Change Theme

Edit `styles/main.css` - all colors defined in `:root` variables:

### Change Models

Click ⚙️ Settings → Select model:

- Grok 4.1 Fast (recommended - fast & smart)
- Claude Opus 4.5 (thoughtful & detailed)
- GPT-5.1 (creative & versatile)
- DeepSeek v3.1 (budget-friendly)

### Change Max Files

Settings → "Max Files to Analyze" (default: 100)

Increase for large projects, decrease for performance.

## 🐛 Troubleshooting

### "File System Access API not supported"

**Solution:** Use Chrome or Edge browser (not Firefox/Safari)

### "Failed to open folder"

**Solution:**

1. Make sure you're using a compatible browser
2. Grant permission when browser asks
3. Try a different folder (some system folders are protected)

### "API error: 401"

**Solution:** Check your OpenRouter API key in Settings

### Chat not streaming

**Solution:**

1. Check internet connection
2. Verify API key is valid
3. Try different model

### Files not showing

**Solution:**

1. Make sure folder has text files (.js, .py, .md, etc.)
2. Binary files are skipped automatically
3. Check "Max Files" setting
