TIN Registration Guide (Nigeria)

A Tax Identification Number (TIN) is a unique 11-digit identifier issued by the Joint Tax Board (JTB) through the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS). Every taxpayer in Nigeria—whether individual or corporate—must have a TIN for tax filing, business registration, and opening corporate bank accounts.

Individual TIN Registration

Individuals can obtain a TIN instantly because the system links TINs directly to existing Bank Verification Numbers (BVN) or National Identity Numbers (NIN). Most Nigerians with a BVN already have a TIN generated automatically.

Online Method (Recommended)

Portal: https://tin.jtb.gov.ng/

Required Information:

  • BVN (11 digits) OR NIN (11 digits)
  • Date of birth (must match BVN/NIN records)
  • Phone number registered with BVN/NIN

Process:

  1. Visit https://tin.jtb.gov.ng/ and click "Verify TIN" or "TIN Request"
  2. Enter your BVN or NIN, date of birth, and registered phone number
  3. If a TIN exists, it displays immediately. If not, the system creates one
  4. Complete any additional prompts: full legal name, residential address, occupation
  5. Upload passport photograph (if prompted)
  6. Submit—TIN is typically sent to your email within 24-48 hours

Common Issues:

  • Phone number mismatch: Use the number linked to your BVN at your bank
  • Name discrepancy: Names must match exactly (including middle names) with BVN/NIN records
  • Date of birth error: Contact your bank to correct BVN details if wrong

In-Person Method

Where: Any FIRS office or State Inland Revenue Service (SIRS) office nationwide

Required Documents:

  1. Valid government ID: National ID Card, Driver's License, International Passport, or Voter's Card
  2. Passport photograph (recent, white background)
  3. Proof of address: Utility bill (PHCN, water), bank statement, or tenancy agreement dated within 3 months

Process:

  1. Request the "Individual Taxpayer Registration Input Form" at the tax office
  2. Complete all sections: personal details, contact information, employment status, employer name (if applicable)
  3. Submit form with documents to the registration desk
  4. Receive TIN within 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on queue

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I already have a BVN. Do I automatically have a TIN? Yes, the JTB links TINs to BVNs. Visit https://tin.jtb.gov.ng/ with your BVN and date of birth to retrieve it instantly.

Q: My company was registered with CAC but I never got a TIN. What do I do? CAC issues tentative TINs since 2020. Check https://tin.jtb.gov.ng/TinRequestExternal with your RC or BN number. If not found, submit a fresh application through the portal.

Q: Can I use my personal TIN for my business? No. Businesses require separate corporate TINs. Personal TINs (linked to BVN) are for individual tax obligations like PAYE. Business TINs (linked to CAC) are for company tax, VAT, and withholding tax obligations.

Q: What if my name on BVN doesn't match my ID? Visit your bank to update your BVN details. The TIN system pulls directly from BVN, so mismatches cause rejection.

Q: How do I verify if a TIN is valid? Use the JTB verification portal at https://tin.jtb.gov.ng/. Enter the TIN and it displays the registered name and status.

Q: Can I register for TIN from outside Nigeria (diaspora)? Yes. Use https://tin.jtb.gov.ng/ online with your BVN/NIN. No physical presence required. Companies can submit documents via email to the nearest FIRS office with diaspora services.

Q: What is TaxPro-Max and do I need it? TaxPro-Max is the FIRS integrated tax administration system. All taxpayers (individuals and companies) must use it to file annual returns, pay taxes, and generate tax clearance certificates. After TIN registration, you receive TaxPro-Max login credentials separately.

Q: My TIN application was rejected. What are common reasons?

  • CAC registration not fully completed or certificate not uploaded to CAC portal
  • Director's BVN does not match the name on CAC records
  • Business address proof is expired or illegible
  • Missing mandatory documents for corporate registration

Q: Is there a fee for TIN registration? TIN registration is FREE at all FIRS offices and online portals. Be wary of scammers charging fees.
