Stop Worrying about AGI: The Immediate Danger is Reduced General Intelligence (RGI) - Towards Data Science
[Article]
Recently, there has been a surge in discussions about Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) — the development of AI systems that can perform any intellectual task that a human can. With this, there is an impending issue regarding the safety and potential danger such AI systems can pose to humanity. However, the danger from AGI may not be the immediate concern; Rather, it’s the Reduced General Intelligence (RGI) that should be at the top of our list.
Rather than fearing the rise of super-AI, we need to focus our time and resources on addressing the potential harm coming from systems with lower levels of intelligence. Reduced General Intelligence could refer to AI systems that are designed to tackle a single problem, or to handle specific tasks, rather than excelling in multiple areas of thinking. These systems, while less sophisticated than AGI, pose tangible dangers in the present.
Systems designed with lower levels of intelligence may be prone toangerous errors if not programmed properly or used inappropriately. Take, for example, self-driving cars. Although they are far from being AGI, errors in their programming can lead to unforeseen accidents that could potentially result in human deaths. In fact, several instances of self-driving cars being involved in accidents have already been brought to light.
Another potential threat of reduced general intelligence is in AI assisting tasks. These systems, while not designed to take over every aspect of human intelligence, can still automate tedious tasks or even make threatening decisions based on underlying algorithms. When an AI being used to design artificial limbs makes an error in its design, it can have dire consequences for the person receiving that prosthesis.
In both of these scenarios, the AI systems work within a carefully defined scope that, while it may not rival human intelligence, still has a significant impact on the decision-
