Intentionally provocative headlines aside, there is a sense that the debate about artificial intelligence essentially comes down to one thing: Is the technology just an underpaid labor force or has it evolved into something fundamentally different?

Tech leaders and AI developers, to be sure, will tell you that AI has plenty of unique ideas to bring to the table. AI can do all sorts of things that humans can’t – from crunching vast amounts of data to diagnosing diseases, but the underlying question remains: Is AI simply a tool that underpays the human labor, or does it bring something genuinely new and innovative to the market?

This debate is now the focal point of discussion at the highest level of the tech industry – where the big money lies. Many of the tech world’s think tanks and technologists see AI as an entirely new way of solving problems. Whether it is about predicting the weather or even calculating the best route for a self-driving car, AI is seen as an innovator of sorts.

They argue that AI has moved beyond the simple exploitation of cheating human labor by processing huge pools of data to reveal patterns and trends without human intervention. Instead, it is regarded as an advanced problem solver capable of generating valuable insights and conducting complex operations. This idea has been gaining traction, with many firms adopting AI technology en masse to optimize and automate various processes.

The counterargument to this sees AI as essentially just an underpaid labor force that could be replaced by humans. According to this school of thought, there is nothing inherently special about AI; it is essentially an advanced system that processes data using algorithms, but it does not have the capability to innovate, to create or to generate unique insights.

According to some critics, AI is merely an expensive and inefficient substitute for human labor. They argue that introducing AI to a workplace
