Five architects of the AI economy explained at the Milken Global Conference in Beverly Hills where the wheels may be coming off during a discussion chaired by Michael Burkett of TechCrunch. The conversation touched on everything from semiconductor shortages to orbital data centers, encompassing the full range of the AI supply chain. There was an acknowledgment that the entire architecture supporting the technology might be wrong. Andrew N. Amy Wu, the partner at Fidelity Ventures, agreed and took issue with the AI industry's myopic focus on big tech companies. "The problem is that many AI applications are too enterprise-focused or aimed at solving specific problems for big tech companies and they're ignoring the small businesses and individuals that represent the future of the market," she said.
The conversation touched on the ongoing challenge of making AI operational at scale, with Josh Carlson, the president of OpenAI, admitting that there is a lack of infrastructure capable of supporting the growing popularity of AI-based solutions. TechCrunch’s conversation partners discussed how orbital data centers could potentially present a solution to this, harnessing gravity and magnetic fields to help quell energy loss issues and offering maximum uptime.
