According to reports, a number of these laid-off employees discovered that they didn’t qualify for protections under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act. This is because the company had classified them as “remote workers.”
The WARN Act requires companies to provide their employees with at least 60 days' notice before mass layoffs or plant closings. The lack of notice for these employees means they are missing out on some important benefits, such as extra time to find new jobs and financial assistance during the transition period.
This development highlights the urgent need for companies, both in tech and other sectors, to adapt their practices to the new realities of the AI age. In particular, they should be careful when it comes to classifying their workers, because it could have serious legal implications.
Moreover, it sends a message to workers as well; that, with advancements in AI technology, the jobs we know today might not exist tomorrow.
