Community-driven open science for the age of AI
Our Mission
Scientific progress increasingly depends not only on technical innovation but on how effectively we coordinate, share resources, and collaborate across disciplines. Hugging Science addresses this challenge by building a global community of researchers, developers, and practitioners committed to democratizing AI-enabled scientific discovery across physics, biology, chemistry, neuroscience, and beyond.
Our approach is grounded in the principles outlined in our position paper, which identifies the primary barriers to AI democratization in science as fundamentally social and institutional rather than purely technical. By organizing collective action around shared computational challenges, open benchmarks, and accessible infrastructure, we aim to transform fragmented research efforts into coordinated progress.
Core Activities
Community-Driven Research Challenges
We identify and structure upstream computational bottlenecks with broad applicability across scientific domains, creating standardized benchmarks that enable researchers to build on each other's work.
Open Infrastructure and Tooling
We develop and maintain accessible platforms, datasets, and workflows that reduce barriers to entry for researchers at institutions of all resource levels.
Cross-Disciplinary Education and Collaboration
We facilitate knowledge exchange between domain scientists and machine learning researchers through workshops, educational materials, and collaborative projects that bridge technical communication gaps.
Sustainable Community Building
We cultivate an inclusive community where contributions to data curation, infrastructure development, and educational resources are valued alongside algorithmic innovation.
