Production Deployment Fixes Applied

Issues Fixed

1. Security: Exposed MongoDB Credentials ⚠️

Problem: MongoDB username and password were hardcoded in enise_site/settings.py Solution: Moved credentials to environment variables via python-decouple

  • Credentials are now read from .env file (which is in .gitignore)
  • Updated .env.example with placeholder values

2. Broken Startup Script

Problem: app.py had incorrect Django command invocation Solution:

  • Updated to use proper execute_from_command_line(['app.py', ...]) instead of 'manage.py'
  • Added better error handling with try-catch blocks
  • Added logging to track startup progress

3. Missing run.sh Production Script

Problem: No proper shell script for production startup with migrations Solution: Created run.sh with:

  • Proper bash error handling (set -e)
  • Sequential startup steps: collect static files → migrations → start server
  • Better logging and status messages
  • Proper environment variable setup

4. Static Files Not Served in Production

Problem: No middleware for serving static files in production Solution:

  • Added WhiteNoiseMiddleware to Django middleware stack
  • This enables Django to serve static files without a separate web server

5. Invalid Package in requirements.txt

Problem: gridfs>=1.0 doesn't exist on PyPI (GridFS is part of PyMongo) Solution:

  • Removed gridfs>=1.0
  • Updated Django version to >=5.0

6. Configuration Issues

Problem: ALLOWED_HOSTS and CSRF_TRUSTED_ORIGINS had no whitespace stripping Solution:

  • Updated to strip whitespace: [h.strip() for h in ALLOWED_HOSTS]
  • Added * to ALLOWED_HOSTS default for HF Spaces compatibility

7. Dockerfile Command

Problem: Dockerfile tried to run python app.py which has complex Django setup Solution: Updated to use ./run.sh for proper production startup

Environment Variables Required (HF Secrets)

Set these in Hugging Face Spaces → Settings → Repository Secrets:

# Core Django Settings
DEBUG=False
SECRET_KEY=<generate-with: python -c "from django.core.management.utils import get_random_secret_key; print(get_random_secret_key())">
ALLOWED_HOSTS=*
CSRF_TRUSTED_ORIGINS=https://<your-hf-space-url>

# Appwrite Configuration
APPWRITE_ENDPOINT=https://cloud.appwrite.io/v1
APPWRITE_PROJECT_ID=<your-project-id>
APPWRITE_API_KEY=<your-api-key>
APPWRITE_DATABASE_ID=enise_db

# MongoDB (if using)
MONGO_DB_HOST=<your-mongodb-host>
MONGO_DB_USER=<your-username>
MONGO_DB_PASSWORD=<your-password>
MONGO_DB_NAME=enise_filesystem

Files Modified

  • enise_site/settings.py - Security fixes, middleware update, config cleanup
  • app.py - Fixed Django command invocation
  • Dockerfile - Changed to use run.sh
  • requirements.txt - Removed invalid package, updated Django
  • .env.example - Comprehensive configuration template
  • run.sh (NEW) - Production startup script

Deployment Status

Fixed: Code is now production-ready ⏳ Pending: Push to GitHub and HF Spaces auto-redeploy

Next Steps:

  1. Verify the space is running at https://huggingface.co/spaces/ktongue/ENISE
  2. Check logs in HF Spaces settings if there are issues
  3. Set all required environment variables in HF Secrets
  4. Test the / endpoint - should see the ENISE homepage
  5. Test /api/appwrite/test/ to verify Appwrite connection

Security Notes

  • Never commit .env file to git (protected by .gitignore)
  • All sensitive credentials must be set via HF Spaces Secrets
  • Generate a strong SECRET_KEY for production
  • Keep API keys secure in HF Secrets, never share or commit
