🌊 NWPS SWAN Wave Data Puller

A comprehensive wave data extraction and visualization tool that fetches real-time wave data from global meteorological sources including ECMWF and NOAA.

Features

  • Global GRIB Data: Worldwide wave heights from ECMWF/NOAA GRIB files
  • Arctic Support: Advanced Arctic wave data extraction with multiple fallback methods
  • Interactive Maps: Real-time wave height visualization with Folium maps
  • Single Location Data: NWPS SWAN model data for specific locations
  • Data Export: JSON export functionality for analysis

Arctic Data Extraction

This application includes advanced Arctic wave data extraction capabilities that handle the common ECCODES polar stereographic projection errors. The system automatically:

  • Attempts multiple extraction methods (pygrib, wgrib2, CDO)
  • Provides fallback methods for problematic Arctic GRIB files
  • Returns data in standardized format regardless of extraction method

Usage

  1. Global GRIB Data: Click "Fetch Global Wave Data" to download worldwide wave information
  2. Single Location: Use "Fetch Location Wave Data" for specific coordinates
  3. Data Files: View and analyze previously downloaded data files

Technical Details

  • Built with Gradio for interactive web interface
  • Uses pygrib, cfgrib, and xarray for GRIB file processing
  • Folium maps for visualization
  • Docker containerized for consistent deployment

Error Handling

The application gracefully handles:

  • ECCODES polar stereographic errors in Arctic regions
  • Temporary server unavailability
  • Invalid GRIB files
  • Network connectivity issues

Only real government/institutional wave data is supported - no synthetic data.
