Project Description for ObsidianAI Magazine Generator Grant Proposal
Overview & Motivation
ObsidianAI Magazine Generator is an open-source, browser-based tool that transforms any user-supplied theme into a fully-formatted, 60+-page PDF magazine in minutes—no design or editorial experience required. Traditional magazine production demands teams of writers, editors, designers, and a costly layout process; our solution leverages the Qwen-1.5-14B-Chat model and an automated HTML→PDF pipeline (WeasyPrint + CSS) to collapse that workflow into a single click. Whether you’re an educator demonstrating AI-powered storytelling, a niche publisher prototyping a new zine, or a hobbyist wanting a professional-quality newsletter, ObsidianAI makes magazine-quality output accessible to everyone.
Key Features & Technical Approach
• Pre-tuned Section Blueprint
A 14-section template (cover, editor’s letter, six feature articles, interviews, reviews, resources, back cover) with doubled word-counts ensures ~65 A4 pages at default margins.
• Robust LLM Looping
Each section “loops” generation until it meets its target word-count, preventing early cut-offs and guaranteeing completeness.
• Professional-Grade Styling
Embedded HTML/CSS (14 pt Georgia, 1.6 line-height, clean page breaks) produces a polished, typographically consistent layout without any user CSS knowledge.
• Interactive Two-Tab UI
Users can both chat with “Obsidian Assistant” for on-the-fly brainstorming and generate the magazine from the same interface.
• Scalable Deployment
Hosted on Hugging Face Spaces with Accelerate’s automatic device sharding, the app runs Qwen-14B in FP16 across multi-GPU setups (A10G/A100/L4 tiers) for rapid, reliable generation.
Community Impact & Sustainability
• Open-Source & Extensible
All code is MIT-licensed on GitHub; contributors can add new section types, templates, or languages by editing a single Python list, fostering an ecosystem of community-driven layouts.
• Education & Outreach
Instructors can embed the live demo into AI-in-education curricula, giving students immediate, hands-on experience with generative LLM workflows and publication pipelines.
• Democratizing Publishing
By lowering cost and technical barriers, ObsidianAI empowers small publishers, community groups, and individuals to create professional-quality magazines without specialized software or staff.
Grant Objectives & Timeline
With grant support, we will:
1. Polish the UI & UX (Month 1): Add guided onboarding, adjustable section controls (e.g. article count, font size), and dual PDF/HTML download.
2. Localization & Accessibility (Month 2): Add multilingual templates, improve HTML semantics for screen readers, and integrate hyphenation rules per language.
3. Community Toolkit & Documentation (Months 2–3): Publish a step-by-step “build your own magazine” tutorial, host a live webinar series, and seed a template marketplace for community contributions.
Budget & Sustainability
Grant funds will subsidize GPU credits for Space hosting, domain/branding, and developer time for UI improvements and documentation. As adoption grows, we’ll encourage community-led maintenance and explore sponsorship or minimal “pro” feature tiers to sustain ongoing cloud costs.
