Someone please explain when to use the various clip options in the comfyUI node

I have a basic idea of when to use the clip_1, clip_g, and the xxxl nodes. Like, the latter is used mostly for text. but other than that it is very much foreign territory.
Does anyone have the details about when to use which of these and for what specific purposes ?
