Model Description

This repository archives the classical Two-Pass Auto-Context Semantic Context Forest ablation baseline (extending Wang et al., MICCAI MCV 2013 from knee MRI cartilage segmentation to 3D thoracic CT rib centerlines):

  1. Pass-1 Appearance Forest (rib_forest_pass1.joblib): 120 trees, 228 features comprising raw CT intensity, 27 multi-scale Gaussian derivatives (sigma = 1, 2, 4 mm), and 200 Random Shift Intensity Difference (RSID) pairs with offsets in [-20, 20] voxels (+/-40 mm), gated by an empirical high-intensity bone mask (I_raw > 1150, roughly > 126 HU).
  2. Pass-2 Auto-Context Forest (rib_forest_pass2.joblib): 100 trees, 306 features combining the 228 Pass-1 appearance features with 28 multi-scale differential features of the Pass-1 probability map and 50 long-range random-shift probability context differences in [-40, 40] voxels (+/-80 mm).

Scientific Findings & Ablation Role

This checkpoint pair is released to document two key scientific findings reported in the paper:

  • Why appearance-only auto-context underperforms in thoracic CT: Because all 24 ribs share virtually identical local cortical cross-sections and the I_raw > 1150 bone gate admits vertebrae, sternum, scapulae, and clavicles, Pass-2 sharpens precision (99.6 %, only 1 false positive) at the expense of eroding thin costal arcs (78.0 % recall, 9.36 mm LCD). Replacing this appearance-only setup with canonical lung-anchored coordinates and HU standardization (wq2012/ribline-anatomical-scf) reduces LCD from 9.36 mm to 2.88 mm and raises accuracy from 71.0 % to 95.1 %.
  • Stage-3 impact on noisy detectors: Replacing naive vertical Z-sorting (21.30 mm LCD, 43.0 % accuracy) with Stage-3 bilateral polar dynamic programming (BilateralViterbiLabeler) and RibSnake reduces LCD by more than half (9.36 mm) and boosts labeling accuracy by +28.0 percentage points (71.0 %) on the exact same Pass-2 probability maps.
